Hi
I am interested in teaching in an English summer camp in South Korea in summer 2009. However I am finding it extremely difficult to get information online. If anyone could answer any of these questions it would be greatly appreciated.
1. What time of year exactly do the summer camps run?
2. How long do they go for?
3. I have a CELTA certificate and one years teaching experience in Australia but no degree/bachelor. Will this be a problem?
4. Is it best to have a summer job already lined up before arriving in korea or best to travel there and then find the best deal?
5. If the latter, how early should I go to Korea?
6 a). If the former, what is the best way to apply? (eg. websites? recommended companies?)
6 b). Is it risky going to Korea without a job already lined up?
7. What is the pay like?
8. Are meals/accommodation paid for?
9. What are the teaching hours?
10. What is the general atmosphere/work ethic like?
11. What kind of VISA should I apply for
12. Is it worth working in a Summer camp?
13. Is Korea the highest paying country for English Summer Camp teachers?
Thank you immensely in advance to all those who will share their knowledge and experience |

I would answer all your questions but number 3 is a deal breaker. You will not, under any circumstances, be able to work at a camp without a degree. My apologies for breaking the bad news. |

Could someone answer the questions anyway? I'm very interested in doing the same and I do have a degree. |

1/2. June, July Aug... some are all 3, some are 2 months, some are 4 weeks in july... thats roughly when though, their length is variable.
3. You stand zero chance of getting a job without a BA or 4 year degree equivalent because it is required to get a visa.
4. I would say line one up before you come. Especially since you don't have a degree and if you do come here and get a job it will probably be illegal and you'll be running the risk of breaking korean law.
6a) Use this site, when the time comes the job board will be full of camp jobs. b) yes
7. In my experience pay isn't all that great except for some of the 2-3 month camps. Usually the shorter camps don't pay for all of your flight so that dents into the pay as well.
8. Meals are probably not, accommodating probably will be.
9-10. completely depends on the camp.
11. You're not eligible for an e-2 so you probably can't get any teaching visa because of your lack of degree.
12. Worth based on what? It depends on the jobs, but without a degree you won't be up for any of the best ones, so for you probably not. |
