The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday it is pushing to ban drinking in public parks starting next year to enhance public health and reduce disturbances.

The municipal government said it submitted to the land ministry last month a proposal of revising relevant law to prohibit drinking

in the city's 2,000-odd parks.

Smoking is not allowed in public parks according to law, but no similar rules exist for drinking.

Reacting positively to the proposal, the land ministry is now reviewing it, the city said, adding it expects the revised law to take effect early next year.

"It aims to minimize disturbances caused by drunk men and to promote public health," a city official said. "Drinking will be allowed only at snack bars in the parks, and violators will face a fine of 50,000 to 70,000 won."

I wonder if the next step is to ban public drinking altogether. I'm guessing some of you here will rejoice at this idea, but I bet they'll enforce this as well as they enforce non-smoking areas.

I think the last time I drunk in public was in Berlin 3 years ago. It's definitely not legal there but discretely/quietly going to a park and having a few beers with friends won't attract heat, it's just a law to throw thugs out. A good thing IMO.

In other words, let's concentrate all the drunks into one location and make sure that certain well-connected people can profit from them. You can still drink, and presumably when you're finished you can stumble away from the snack bar and cause the same drunken shenanigans around the park as you did before, you just can't bring your own booze.

Even if they implement this, the drinking culture is too pervasive and the police are too impotent and cowardly to actually enforce or do anything about this law.

If the authorities here are really serious about something they usually find a way to implement, 'specially if Christian groups get behind it.

That really baffled me as well. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of banning drinks? Can't drink in the park, but you can, you just have go where they sell it in the park.

Lol. Even though I never go there, this was the first thing that came to my mind. To be honest, I think getting drunk in public is the only thing the homeless can claim as their own, so it's not right to encroach on their turf.

Like how they banned smoking in non-designated areas in Gangnam?

I go there everyday and walk past many of the same people smoking and walking as usual.

If there's something I've learned over the years, it's that Korean enforcement lacks one important virtue: persistence.

I'm preparing my next summer picnic baskets right now!~ Yoeuido Awaits!

I hope they strongly enforce at Hongdae playground. That place is a state every morning as i walk past it on my way to work. The "toocoolforschool" gang should be made to pick up their own bottles, cans and crap.

The "toooldtohavefun" crowd should just avoid the area entirely then. There's almost no public trashcans in Korea, everywhere there's people becomes a mess of litter.

Im partner in business 2 mins from the playground. if "toooldtohavefun" means not vomiting on businesses steps, spraying the walls, pissing in flowerpots and generally wrecking the place then maybe i am too old. Im 28.
