CONTRACT UPDATED

There have been some confusion and misunderstanding regarding the eligibility for Category 1+ (see 21. Eligibility in the 2009-2010 Contract. )

In order to qualify as a Category 1+ teacher,

Category 1+

Category 1 AND Minimum two consecutive years of employment within GEPIK

one must have been a Category 1 teacher AND ALSO have the experience of minimum two consecutive years of employment within GEPIK.

Therefore, in order to qualify as Category 1+, one should have at least 4 years of full time English teaching experience as below


Category 1+

Category 1 AND Minimum two consecutive years of employment within GEPIK

(i.e. minimum of four years of full time English teaching experience as a Category 1 teacher)


All else remains unchanged in the Contract.

Yes, it is. I thought I'd be on 2.5 million a month for my next contract, now it's clear I'll be on 2.3 million instead.

If you look at the wording, you'd need to be a category 1 teacher for 4 years, 2 of which must be consecutive, to move up to category 1.

I'll be category 1 on my next contract, which means I'd need to work 4 more years to become category 1+ i.e. earn 2.5 million won a month.

I may be wrong but that's how it looks.

Fantastic don't you think?!!!

I hope they continue to increase the pay, otherwise I'll consider SMOE in the long term. GEPIK is epic. Laughing

In reading the contract (and it supposedly reflects their *meaning* now but since it didn't be sure, one can't be sure they mean what's written - but in reading the contract, it seems to be 4 years total and 2 years at Level 1 consecutive at GEPIK. So, if you have 2 years teaching - which you'd need to be Level 1, you are two years away from 1+.

Or so it seems.

This is what I'm referring to:

(i.e. minimum of four years of full time English teaching experience as a Category 1 teacher)

I'll become category 1 at the start of my next contract. This suggests I'd need to have 4 years experience as category 1, including 2 consecutive years, before I'd move up to category 1+.

It is simply double talk. My co-teacher and I went round and round about this issue when discussing my contract. I came into the country as a category 1 teacher almost 5 years ago. I have always been on category one, and worked at the same public school for 4 of those years. It was easy and simple until the co-teacher read both of the statements written with regard to the length of service within GEPIK and the number of years as an instructor. Basically the statements contradict each other and one cannot be true if the other is considered.

Here is the problem: the language of the contract and the intent of the author assumes that everyone coming into GEPIK is coming in as a Category 3 teacher with no experience and no credentials to qualify them as a Category 1 teacher. This was not the case in my situation since I had more than 25 years of public school teaching experience as a licensed and certified teacher, plus a Masters degree. I fought hard for the Category 1 recognition my first year and I knew that was more important to me than the money to begin with because of this very situation that has arisen. Now that I have been teaching English here in Korea for the past 4 years, the co-teacher is still confused about whether or not I should be Category 1+. I spent almost a full hour trying to explain it simply, but the person couldn't understand it.

I finally got it worked out and we are good to go, but everyone beware, the language of the new contract is going to cause a great number of headaches for people. If your co-teacher or handler would like a number to speak with my co-teacher to get the information just shoot me a PM and I will do what I can to get that number so you can have them hear it from someone else.

Whatever. I wouldn't work for GEPIK again even if they paid me 4 million/month.

So, the "experience" part applies only to teaching in Korea?

I have an in between job I think for a GEPIK position. It's at a public school, but I get to choose what I teach like at a hagwon. The pay is not as good as a hagwon (about 150,000 won less), but it's not as bad as a first year teacher who only makes 2.0 or 2.1.

I think you really got to negotiate with the school for what you want. Some of those low ball GEPIK jobs can go up if you talk to the school. Don't give up on the first try and never take the first job offer. Shop around.

That's for sure. Many but not all schools are holding their purse strings extra tight during the economic decline.

Really do your homework before accepting either a public or hogwan position as scummy, dishonest people exist in both areas.
