A recent book by neurologist Oliver Sacks, author of some other brilliant stuff, asks some good questions and gets into some fine details in this book.

I've read just some so far as I let it go on a while. Something that meant sense to me sounds obvious enough, but makes a good question too. Why does music, something unnecessary for survival at least, occupy so much of life, and why is it a thing that apparently cuts quicker and deeper than most other things? It's almost automatic, the personal reactions and the attachments. People form bonds and arguments.

Music is amazing and emotive.

For some people.

For me, music is not important at all. I do not own a single CD. I have a few scattered mp3's on my computer and player, but I rarely listen to them, and then, usually only when I finish an audio book and don't feel like starting a new one so quickly after.

I have no idea who is popular in the music world these days.

So, not everyone is a music maniac.

Oh, and I hate any word using the suffix -philia....

Well, do not dismiss the author, whom I think many would enjoy. It's just a title and his writing is good. It's not just about music, but also how the brain functions, with many interesting stories. Lots of words in there I don't know, too.

Here's a video about some amazing guy Sacks knew:

So does that make you a Philiaphobe? or a Misphiliac? Perhaps it's just an underlying case of hellenologophobia.
