Hello,

Some friends are visiting korea, and of course- I'd like to ask for some days off, but I have no idea how to go about breaching the subject with my director ( who doesn't speak English)..

I'm the only foreigner working at my hagwon....
I don't want to create any confusion or come off as demanding; I care a lot about being able to communicate with my director in spite of language and cultural barriers.

What is the usual process for requesting the days, do directors generally give you your vacation time during a particular season? Does it depend on the coworkers? Can anyone relay any past good/bad experiences they had when requestiong vacation time?
thanks

I have the standard, i think:

1)The Employee can get 10 days in total for a paid vacation while the Employee is under the contract. The paid vacation will be according to the Employer's schedule, during the period of the contract. National Holidays, Saturdays and Sundays shall not be included in a paid vacation.

2)With the exception of entitled paid vacation and sick leave, in the case that the Employee is absent, 90,000 won per day shall be deducted from the salary.

Well, that reads like the typical Hawon contract. If time your visitors will be around coincides with the set vacation time, you are good! Otherwise, it isn't going to be an easy task to get some time off. It will probably cost you some serious cash.

For me, my vacation time is set. It is aligned with HHI given the area I live in. I get a week in the winter around Christmas. Then, I get another week in the summer. Both of these times the academy is closed.

Well, looks like you have a reasonable arrangement. How many days do you want? Tell them you want time off, and if you want to be nice about it, ask them when the best time to take these days off are. Don't spring it on them a week before. Make it at least a 1 month notice so they can get another teacher to fill in for you.

I would use the vacation time because you don't know if you will use it later on. If you ever do, it's only 90,000 won.

If you have sick days, just call in sick.. They are not going to "let you" take vacation unless school is out. If you are going to be "sick" for more than 3 days or so then you need to have a doctor's note.
