So I sent my documents to S. Korea and was wondering how long it usually takes until I get my notice of appointment and official contract? Any experienced SMOE'ers inputs would be gladly appreciated!

LOL... Sorry, have to laugh...
SMOE people who are currently re-signing were supposed to have new contracts on their desk yesterday at the latest... Today I asked my co-teacher, who received an email saying "please wait"... (Literally, in Korean, all it said was please wait LOL)...

On top of that, I have another friend who is trying to change schools (already approved by everyone involved), but SMOE being SMOE she called her district office to confirm... This is her story:

Person 1:
"You pass evaluation"
"I know but I need to confirm that I will be placed at another school. I have a certain school I would like to work at."
"Call to _____ person Number is ____"

Person 2:
"Maybe ok but must call ____, they are supervisor".

Person 3:
"I don't know. Call this person."

Person 4:
"I will transfer." (transfers...his secretary picks up, so...)

Person 5:
"He is at lunch".

Then she sends me this about 5 minutes later:
It just got better!

I called the very last number that someone gave me and who answers but...Jon Pak!

So I explain the situation and he was like, "You need to speak to Winnie. And her number is ____" - and this is one of the previous numbers someone has given me upon which they said to call so and so.

So... Good luck getting your contract soon... Incompetent doesn't even begin to describe this organization some days Razz

Prepare to hate and loathe orientation

It will consume your soul, as it has consumed the soul of all others.

I'll follow the wisdom of Homer J through orientation.

"Alright Brain, you don't like me, and I don't like you. But lets just do this, and I can get back to killing you with beer."

I mean, not that there will be any thinking involved. Just to bear with the boredom.

Or pray to the Gods that your visa gets delayed like mine did! LOL...
18 hours at the orientation centre (Friday night to Saturday afternoon) was 18 hours too long!

I've got a question to add on here, since you already made the snappy title and people are talking about orientation.

SMOE and my recruiter are aware that I can't make it to the orientation. I'll be working at my current job through that week. I have asked many many times, and they keep saying its no problem.

Just wondering if anybody else is in my same boat. They have told me there are others, would just like to hear it directly from somebody else. Am I alone in this?

Thanks for all that replied, but it appears that SMOE isn't very consistent. I mean, how hard could it be to tell the school district that you have someone for the job? Aren't they suppose to be ready for that kind of stuff especially with the new school year coming right around the corner?

I got mine yesterday via Fed Ex, so they are in the process. I sent my documents in May and signed the updated contract June 13. I don't think you would have to wait as long as I did since it sounds like you just sent your documents. Hopefully you'll get yours within a week or two.

I got so fed up with my SMOE recruiter that I turned down my contract. I had questions about the contract itself that she was not able to answer or clarify. I am currently working with SCPSRC and it's like night and day. My recruiter now responds well within 24 hrs to every email and query I have, there's no B.S., and he speaks and writes in perfect English, which makes communication effortless. Good luck to those of you with SMOE (I hope your experiences are much better than what I had with them).

I sent mine about two-three weeks ago which should be around the same time as you sent yours. I just don't want to wait until August to get my E2 and then leave right away. Sorry, I'm just that kind of person that would like to know where I'll be in August...at least a month ahead of time. Thanks for your input. I'll hopefully see you at the orientation.

HA! I'm just about in your boat right now. I'm getting very impatient with SMOE because I'm getting nothing from them, not even a "Hey, we received your documents."

Just out of curiosity, what does SCPSRC stand for?

Can anyone tell me how long it took (in all) for you to mail your passport and documents to the Korean Consulate AND have then returned? I probably won't get my notice of appointment back from SMOE for another couple weeks and then I leave for Italy (obviously needing my passport for that) that leaves me a week window to mail my passport and get it back in time. My recruited said that would be no problem because they 'are fast' but I don't want to risk missing my vacation because my passport hasn't been returned yet!

Dont worry.

SMOE is desperate for recruits.

If you've signed your contract you've already been sold-er, farmed out to a school.

It is not in anyone's interest to deny you to come to Korea. Even if you miss orientation or are actually late getting here, it's really not a big deal. And if the school or SMOE actually has the gumption to say something about it, just make sure you remember the exact date you sent your info to them.

Remember, SMOE is a huge bureaucracy first and foremost. Logic and speed are not high on the priorities list.

Get it in writing from the SMOE representative, and the guy above him. Print it out and make backup copies.
