I just brought back a 7200 rpm 16 mb cache 2.5 Seagate drive and put it in my laptop. Vista is actually running pretty speedy now. Boot up time is significantly improved. The old drive was 5400 8 mb, I believe.

A lot of cheaper laptops put in mediocre hard drives.

I figured I wasn't using the laptop on batteries, so why not use a faster hard drive?

Any other ideas out there for speeding up laptops?

I found this webpage that has informative descriptions of various arcane Windows Vista features you might want disable, or keep.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial134.html

The most worthless and resource abusing feature, imho, is the indexing service. Disable.

Upgrading your ram is always another cheap option. (Depending on your computers max support)
