The labor union of Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation stirred up controversy after posting a video clip on YouTube that justifies its strike against media bills introduced by the ruling Grand National Party to the National Assembly. The video clip was produced in five languages -- Chinese, English, French, Japanese and Spanish -- and posted on Friday.
The union first uploaded the video to its online caf (caf.daum.net/saveourmbc) before posting it to YouTube. A news anchor opens the clip by telling the audience there is breaking news. Members of the union appear and each expresses their opposition to the bills in different languages. The flags of the five countries appear in the background as the speaker speaks in the respective language, and it is subtitled in Korean.
Internet users disagreed with the actions of the MBC union. Some were concerned that such a video, made out of self-interest, would disgrace the country overall, and that the union is acting from the fear of industry competition and weakened influence and privileges of union members. Others expressed support, saying it is necessary to let the world know about it.
