Those stats have been surprising me for a few years now.
Does anyone know if the definition of murder is exactly the same in both countries? For example, are there things that would be classified as manslaughter in one place, but get classified as murder in another? |

DEFINITION: Total recorded intentional homicides, completed. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. |
It doesn't define homicides. Also, it says it covers the period 1998-2000. The stats are nearly 10 years old.
Its just about useless. |

No hite pls:
Were you drinking Hite Beer, though, when you wrote "less" instead of "fewer?"
Take out the minority murders (re: Blacks and Hispanics) for the U.S. and you'd be looking at a different tally. |

Maybe more telling is the death rate:
wikipedia wrote: |
Crude death rate refers to the number of deaths over a given period divided by the person-years lived by the population over that period. It is expressed as number of deaths per 1,000 population.
Rank ↓ Country ↓ Death rate (deaths/1000 persons)
14 South Africa 17.0
66 United Kingdom 9.9
96 United States 8.2
113 Canada 7.4
119 Australia 7.1
123 New Zealand 7.1
149 Korea, South 5.9 |

I guess being in the middle of a fratricidal civil war conducted by fanatical militia groups really does help to lower the murder rate. |

So much for poverty=crime(or, black=crime, depending on your ideological outlook). According to this survey, Sudan, Madagascar and Botswana have fewer murders than Iceland.
Even Nigeria, while not quite reaching Sudan's heavenly heights of peace and tranquility, still manages to have fewer murders than Sweden and Finland. |

Not to dis the Canadians, but if a Canadian woke up in the mood to murder someone they'd have to go hunting for someone to kill in a country with 3/5's the population spread out in a country that is like 100's bigger.
Given that Koreans live in a crowded country, I think they're pretty laid back. I get stressed sometimes when the crowds get to me and feel like taking a machine gun to anyone in sight. Remarkable restraint on Koreans' part, I'd say. |

Unless you know the methodology used to measure these stats, they are largely meaningless. I mean, I'm sorry, but I really doubt that many of these countries have well developed justice systems and that their figures are as accurate as more developed countries.
Edit: from the comments section of the link
Quote: |
UN-crime survey sates: "The statistics cannot take into account the differences that exist between the legal definitions of offences in various countries, of the different methods of tallying, etc.Consequently, the figures used in these statistics must be interpreted with great caution. In particular, to use the figures as a basis for comparison between different countries is highly problematic." |
