My school just told me that they won't be putting me in a class starting next week, since that's when the new classes come in.

My contract started in early August, so my visa is still valid.

What can I do? They said that my classes have lost too many kids. Talk about a ton of bricks.

Cool, sounds like all you'll have to do is just ride out the rest of your contract and pick up your paycheck every month. Hell I wish my school would do that. If they didn't want me to teach I'd be doing somersaults.

... it's not like that. What a waste of keystrokes.

They haven't given me a date to be out of my place yet, but they asked me how much time I need. I don't know how much time I need, because the last time I applied for a job here was in Canada.

Any helpful suggestions would be great. I want to stay in the Apgujeong/Yaksu area.

They're firing you? Why didn't they say that? Hell they have to give you 1 month written and cosigned notice to do that according to K-law? They can't just tell you on Friday that Monday you're done. I'd go straight to the labor board if I were you and plead human rights violation. Have you been paying taxes and pension? Do you K-medicare?

Start looking for a new job I guess. Maybe you can get your visa swapped over to another school or something.

My advice would be to not dwell on it or take it personally. Just try to make this situation work for you as best you can.

Good luck!

Well I guess they are firing me. They need to give me one month's notice?

I've been paying taxes and pension, and I do have 50% healthcare coverage which I've been using.

Cigarettes, any more info would be helpful. I might go back to school and talk to him about not giving me some kind of written notice. I just don't want to piss them off. They offered to help me find another job.

Also, how can I explain to a potential new employer why I left my job?

Labor Law states that they must give you 30 days notice or the equivalent of 30 days pay. If not, they are in violation of the law and you have a very easy Labor Board case. But continue to go to work because you do need that notice saying they've fired you. If it says it begins Monday etc... than it's in your favor because that's proof they are not following the law.

Oh Yah, DON'T SIGN ANYTHING!!!!!

So "notice" means written notice right? They can't just tell me in words.

Not like on The Office when Michael declared bankruptcy by simply yelling it.

So I will keep going to work until they give me a piece of paper saying that I'm out, and I won't sign it until when?

make sure the "notice" of firing isn't pre-dated.

And make sure it's in English so you know what you're actually signing.

"My area was hit really hard by the recession in Korea and my school lost a lot of students."

While you and your employer are still on good terms, get them to write you a letter of recommendation for your next job. Tell them you need two weeks after the official 'fire' date (which hasn't happened yet). That's how long you get to stay after your visa is cancelled, I think.

They'll need time to get a new teacher, anyways.

YOU should be the one pissed off, especially if they don't give you one month's notice and a letter of release. You should also try to collect a pro-rated amound of your severence

Technically you can declare bankruptcy by just going to court and yelling "debtors petition" at the clerk Wink

ppcg4,

You don't have to sign anything that your employer gives you, in any language.

If your employer gives you 30 days written notice and asks for a written acknowledgement that you have in fact received notice, then you can give them one if you choose to.

And like Cerriowen says, check the date on the written notice. It cannot be back-dated to the verbal notice.
