I am new here. I just read of the American Recruiter, website is teachingenglishinKorea. The director's name is Brad Brennan and he says the average teacher saves 15,000 to 20,000 per year, and that he himself paid off 25,000 in student loans in 15 months teaching in Korea. Any comments? Is this a good recruiter, any experiences? Also, I assume that the only visa I can acquire is the E2, is that true? I am single, college degreed but no teaching experience.

Sure you can make that much teaching privates. But under the E-2 it is illegal to do this. Maybe your school has some agreement where they let you do privates after hours but I doubt this would be the case. Get the recruiter and school to include this on your contract. Otherwise expect the salary on your contract to be the salary earned.
I'm sure you'll get a few more responses saying this recruiter is f.o.s. and to stay away. They will probably be correct.

what is everyone's view on this?
what is it like?
do you even have time to do "extras" like this?
it might be illegal but so is not claiming 'tips' in certain jobs.

i'm curious as my recruiter mentioned this as well.

i would do a poll thingy but it seems i can't on a reply.

If you go to Korean Job Boards on this site, a few lines from the top is an ad, "American Recruiter" who claims to be recruiting teachers to Korea for ten years. He says he saved 25k in 15 months, himself, teaching in Korea.

Are you going trust someone who implies it's OK to break the law in a foreign country?

Are you going to trust someone who is not only recruiting, but also shilling for a 'school' that sells certificates for $1200?

Their job is to find you a position and that is the end of them. If u want to eat kimbap at 1000 each maybe you could save that much.

I would have easily saved that in 15 months.... if I'd managed to stay at one job for a full year and collected severence and airfare. Laughing

For a dose of reality:

The average teacher here saves around W1,000,000 a month...or less. Do the exchange rate math for your country's currency.

No teacher on an E-2 visa, working only a legal job, ever saved $25,000 a year. Incomes have been edging up a bit lately, but a couple of years ago the typical monthly salary was W2.2 million + one month severance, for a yearly total of W28,600,000.

Yata is probably correct about the "average teacher." Most don't have enough OT or don't want to work so hard, some get cheated, and most are spendthrifts. However, I've known several who have saved more than $25K, legally.

Doing illegal privates it is even easier to save, but hundreds have been caught and fined or deported. It's risky. During the coming downturn, it's likely that people who are losing business will be turning in these illegal teachers more frequently. Beware.

Many teachers have saved $25,000 per year in Korea, legally, on an E2 visa. This was quite easy when exchange rates were better.

Here's an example in Won.

Salary ...... 2,000,000
less ............ 200,000 for taxes, pension, health
less ............ 300,000 total monthly expenses, if you're frugal

Net base ... 1,500,000

overtime ....1,200,000 15 hours per week at hogwan @ 20,000 /hr

Monthly Net 2,700,000

plus yr end severance 2,000,000
plus pension refund 2,160,000

Total Savings for year 36,560,000 won

Since you can get 2,500,000 now with some experience or quals plus 25,000 /hr for OT and it's still easy to live on 300,000 per month, especially when you're working huge OT, big savings are still possible.

Ouch 15 hours a week on top of 30 hours at a hogwan would be very painful and for a wopping 20000 an hour.

How stressed would you be if you did that *beep*.
