Can you think of any examples where the MOVIE was better than the original BOOK?

And I mean real books adaptations, not like the Super Mario Bros movie, or some equally crappy thing that was based off a comic book or video game...

I can't think of any. Although I thought the Lord of the Rings movies were pretty damned good, but didn't top the books.

Very Happy

Harry Potter movies are definitely better than the books. The first two books are silly, but the movies make them cute and fun. The next books are long-winded and sophomoric, but the movies are short and snappy and gorgeous to look at.

David Lynch's Dune butchers the plot and philosophy of the book, but its vision of what Dune's universe should look like is better than the books. Compare the guild navigators in the movie to the descriptions in the books.

while not exactly a book. the Film adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross trumped the stage version every time I've seen it performed (4 times now).

The Les Miserables with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush was better than the book, in my opinion. The book was great, but it was 500 or so pages too long. There were so many tangents in the book that were completely unnecessary. There was one part, for example, that spent 50 or so pages on the history of some convent, and then in two pages, a character is there and then leaves.

I think 'High Fidelity' was a good attempt. Some things in the movie were better than the book and the film was very faithful to the original (despite moving it from England to America).

Gone with the Wind- I found the book overly long because of so many lengthy descriptions of things. A picture really is worth a thousand words, at least in this case

"Stand by Me" and "Shawshank Redemption" are two mediocre Steven King short stories/novelettes that made better movies.

Does it still count if they're both awful?

Good call. I'd add that The Shining is a fun book but a great movie. Could even say the same of Carrie.

You could make a case for lots of detective/crime/noir stuff of the Raymond Chandler/Dashiell Hammett variety. Though for me the books are often as enjoyable as the movies, films like The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep have become iconic. The Thin Man and The Long Goodbye are great too.

Haven't read du Maurier's Rebecca but Hitchcock made it into a dandy of a film. Come to think of it, many of his films were based on novels or plays which are mostly forgotten but for the life given them by Hitchcock.

Disagree with InsideJohnMalkovich on the Harry Potter stuff, particularly on the first two films which were totally soulless.

Jurassic Park? Blade Runner? The Magnificent Ambersons?
