Hi there,

I'm new to the board and am soon to be arriving in Daegu. I will be living somewhere near the Susung area.

Firstly, I'd like to know if there are any boxing gyms, particularly anywhere that offers one-to-one training. Even just a fitness gym with a heavy bag would be good so that I could at least do something.

Secondly, I'd like to get stuck in to learning the language as early as possible, so I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that has good Korean language classes at weekends.

Thank you very much in advance

Hello and welcome to Daegu. There are many boxing gyms around Susung-gu. You should have little trouble finding a place to train. However, getting 1-1 training may prove more difficult at many gyms. From my understanding (my girlfriend is an amateur boxer and competes regularly) that unless you are competing in higher levels of tournaments, a true "coach" is hard to come by. Many will show you this and that, but having a coach who will stand in front of you holding mitts to practice combinations, pushing you to work harder..etc..may not be so easily found. On a positive note, boxing is not very popular in Korea and many normal Koreans tend to think that boxing is a sport that "gangsters" participate in, the chances are good that if you find a decent gym, you will be around guys who actually have drive and ambition to box, even though most will not be gangsters.

Concerning Korean Language, the YMCA in downtown Daegu offers Korean classes on Saturdays from 11am-1pm. The fee is about 120,000 won for a 3 or 4 month course (book fees not includes, but cost about 35,000 won) While I believe the best place to study Korean is in a full-time university program, the YMCA is a decent class and a great chance for you to meet other expats in the city. Many of the teachers that teach there actually teach Korean to foreigners enrolled in the university programs during the week.

Stop by again and say hi when you arrive in Daegu!
