Chart: http://beatcrave.com/2009-03-03/music-that-makes-you-dumb/

Quote:
CalTech grad student named Virgil Griffith has conducted an interesting (albeit somewhat unscientific) study relating music preferences with SAT scores. While SAT scores are criticized for not accurately determining intelligence, the results show that the smartest students favorite musician is Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371, and at the other end of the spectrum is Lil Wayne, with an average score of 889.

Other bands at the top of the scale are Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens. Check out the full image of the results after the jump:

Surprisingly, no style of music stands out above the rest, but rather most bands fit within the 1000 to 1150 score range. Another question is whether music can be legitimately associated with smarts.

So it's not the music that makes you dumb, but rather the music that dumb people prefer. If SAT scores were indicative of anything other than one's ability to take tests anyway.

If listening to Counting Crows is what smart people do I think I'd rather be dumb.

When was this study done? The SAT has been on a 2400-point scale since 2005.

Sure I do. Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson are infinitely superior to most of the crap bands listed on the chart.

The chart that doesn't make much sense. How did they get a spread of 100 points where the only music preference was Beethoven? A 100 point spread at the bottom of the chart nets you at least 15 different artists. Where's the Gaussian distribution?

Most defintely, Cruisemonkey. If hear my students singing that one more time, I'll flip. I have some beginner students, and I hate going over the alphabet just because of the letter "G". They sing that song incessantly. I feel dumber because of it.

It's really one of those givens that most of us already recognize. I certainly fit right there in the middle with the bands that normal people with average SAT scores listen to. Not low brow enough to be a
%#$ing idiot nor so high to be in geek territory. It's certainly evidence for the truth behind stereotypes!

I specifically remember taking the SAT while my friends waited for me so we could go burn a doobie and head to the State Fair. It's a sure bet we were listening to something right there in the 1050 - 1200 zone on the way.
