So there's this new programme on kiwi TV these days that has all these hot little Chinese, Korean, Russian and French chickies flirting with the kiwi rugby star hosts and - wait for it - speaking English!

No there isn't.

While they do have this kind of crap in Korea, in the form of that bile boiling load of shit programme "Chat with Beauties", there's no way it would be allowed in New Zealand, nor I imagine any other Western country. Women's rights groups for one would object to the sexualization of the guests, and I'm pretty sure the various immigrant communities would also object to the fetishization and trivializtion that shows like "Chat with Beauties" entail.

I know that a lot of Koreans, and many foreigners in Korea too perhaps, will insist that the show is good harmless fun, but to any Koreans who might read this post, please be aware that "Chat with Beauties" is not doing you any favours in terms of boosting Korea's international prestige. I'm sure most of the guests who appear on that show are nice enough in real life, but on that stage they just look like a bunch of make-up smothered novelty dancing foreign monkeys. And by making the guests come across that way, the Koreans behind the programme make Korea itself appear to be patronizing, sexist and more than a little backwards.

Is that show meant to boost Korea's international prestige?

I do agree with you but I suspect that the foreign hotties in question are laughing all the way to the bank. They are making some decent coin by pandering to Koreans' idea that foreigners find it extremely difficult to learn their language ("Oooh you said annyong haseyo! - Clever waygoogin." Cue round of applause). Condescending? Definitely. Sexist? Sure looks that way. A good way for foreign women to earn a few bucks with minimal effort and possibly achieve fame? (in Korea) Almost certainly!

Heck I'll have a crack at it when my Korean is more proficient.

...Check this thread in 1 year to see if I've made it onto the show Laughing

So that 'Chat with Beauties' is still on then? I hate that show. Why?

1. Korean guys trying to get with foreign women. I don't really care if they want to; it's none of my business. But these are probably the same guys who would curse out a Korean woman with a foreigner.

2. This show makes me realize that I'm lazy with my studying.

3. There's this squirrel-looking chick on the show who just bugs me. It makes me miss Clusters cereal. Perhaps I can find that at Costco.

My first thought when I saw that Duncan, when reading the first paragraph was I was jealous. Then I thought, "Typical I get to a level with Korean language - what good does it ever do me, being a guy. Can never use it. The World is for the young and pretty."
So with all these malignant thoughts I'm glad it was untrue.

They have chat with men every Chusok and Chinese New Year.

But alas, they only accept single men.

In other words, you are a waygookin ajosshi trying to cover your jealousy and insecurity by projecting it onto 'them'.

Give them a break.

In the US they have this thing called rap music where half-naked girls dance in sexual positions very close to a "rapper", who "raps" about how many "bitches" he wants to "tap" or how many people he's shot, etc. Usually these rappers border mental retardation, as do half the people who listen to their music, and the whole lot of 'em respect women (and human life) about as much as a Joe Blow America respects the McBurger he's about to eat.

"Chat with Beauties" is small potatoes next to this nonsense from the West.

I've only watched precisely two episodes of the first season, and although I've heard that in the second season that some of the women more experienced and knowledgeable about Korea were ditched in favor of clueless but more photogenic alternatives, the show isn't entirely without positives. For one, Western female friends have told me that they've noticed their Korean female friends have started talking about "foreigner issues" and Korean things from a foreigner's perspective much more with them as a direct result of that show.

An irreverent guide to Korean social issues:

Here's a clip of Jamilla when she was a new face. I don't want to be too critical of her personally, as she's just a go-getting young Uzbekastani who has obviously found the quickest way to international success. I simply consider the entire format of the programme to be degrading and insulting. I've heard that many Koreans themselves also dislike the show and consider it an embarrassment to Korea.

Meh....the show just makes up for the real world.

Plus that one hot Uzbek chick now has a horrd song and music video. But she looks good so all the power to her.

Plus I recall seeing one of the dudes from the Sonal Chatting with Guys special on another program.
