So much for civil liberties...I'm so glad and reassured to see that Korea is following the states in this regard.
I can understand about a criminal background check...I can understand about the diploma check. That it's not filed and that it must be resubmitted is a hassle, but this? Come on...sure, do this if you catch some foreigner doing something bad, but what does this say to those who want to visit or work here?
Korea's going to be in for a shock come next semester when less and less of the traditional foreigners come here and the quality of English education hits an all time new low. No matter how long I live here, I can't get over the *act now and fail to plan for the consequences* mentality at work...

You're already going to get your photo snapped at the airport with facial recognition software.
You're welcome to complain about civil liberties, but you can thank Moslem extremists for it all coming about. Don't take it out on Korea. |

Well I don't like it, but it's a small task. Unless you plan on breaking the law you should have nothing to worry about. Although this is a big deterrent against travelers.
I was watching Heart to Heart on Arirang the other night and there was this lady from the Tourism Ministry talking about how Korea can attract more tourists. She was asked if she thinks so few tourist come to Seoul because it lacks a famous landmark. She said no because Seoul offers lots of diverse things and that the French initially wanted to tear down the Eiffel Tower.
Korea has nothing that Japan, China and Thailand don't have. Korea is just another stop over on an Asian tour unfortunately. |

That's the problem Korean tourism has. They really have nothing of cultural value to anyone who isn't already attracted to Korea. But they keep stating that Korea has "diverse" things, and then they try to talk about the food as if it's world famous, almost as if repeating the same made up information is going to somehow result in more tourism.
If Korea wanted to be taken seriously concerning tourism, it would actually do something to attract tourists, not just try to convince the people already paying attention that there's some kind of attraction. They have to have the worst public relations and publicity model that has ever existed (well, aside from Serbia or Iran).
And if you give advice to help Korea out, the Korean "fans" automatically assume you're Korea bashing, instead of trying to do something that might help Korea out in the long run. |

Their country, their rules. Japan does it too. The UK takes your picture as you enter. It's up to them. |

Many countries, all supposedly great at the civil-liberties stuff, are doing this; but why miss an opportunity to bash Korea. If fewer of the "tradional" foreigners come here, it will be great for Korea: the quality of English education in Korea will go up only if the usual misfits stay at home. |

It's nothing new for Korea. They did it when I first arrived back in 2001, then they stopped. They're just starting to do again what they once did before.
Stop complaining. |

All Korean citizens have their fingerprints on record so this does not surprise nor upset me. Don't think it will deter quality teachers or anything. More than anything it will weed out the shady ones. |

Takes 2 seconds. They can have my DNA sample if they want. Wouldn't bother me. Bigger hassle having to resubmit the same documents year in and year out. |

If you're going over to teach, it really shouldn't matter. You'll not find a working teacher in the U.S. who doesn't have their fingerprints on file.
In my county, they require fingerprints on file if you want to observe or intern. They're inefficient, too. I had to be fingerprinted again to substitute teach, and I'll have to be fingerprinted again when I get a real teaching job. Change countines before you have full certification (there are 3 levels here - statement of eligibility, temporary certificate, and professional certificate)? New fingerprints. |

It's ok if they plant a microchip in me. I mean, it's just a microchip!
I don't think it's a big deal that they have to do a lie detector test and scan my brain patterns while doing it. I mean, some countries do that!
Sterilize me? Fine! It's not like there isn't a chance the genes will regenerate. |

True. But a country that protests safe beef and has a guy track foreign English teachers needs to do more to be safe. I suggest they taste foreigner sperm for AIDS and set themselves on fire every time a non-Korean farts. |

They were doing it for all foreigners coming into the US all the times I've been at the airport. I don't see how this is a big deal about "civil liberties" when so many countries are taking these extra precautions. |
