Maybe I should already know this, but I don't. As a US citizen, how do I get a background check that will be acceptable in Korea? Do I have to have it notorized and apostillized?

It varies state to state. There's information on the U.S. travel.gov website when you go under information on Korea.

Just did it in Florida. It was not hard at all. Took 2 weeks total and cost me $13 (3+10) per copy. I got three copies...just in case.

In my state, you need a check from you local department, that check needs to be notarized (your department may do that when you get it-mine did), and then you send it off to the Sec of State office (for the state you're in - not to Sec. Clinton) to get apostilled. My check was ready on the spot and mailing it to the Sec. of State office took me about 1.5 weeks total. So, really less than 2 weeks but I was lazy and didn't mail it the very day I got it.

Someone on here posted that in Arizona they had to go through the FBI check. That's way more complicated than if you can get the local check done and get the apostille.

To piggyback onto this thread, I just had a question about the notarization. I'll be picking up my background check tomorrow which, I believe, will just be an official piece of paper stating that I have a clean record, but then when I take it to the notary public, what exactly am I asking them to do? Just stamp and sign the piece of paper? Do I sign it also? Thanks.

I have so many things to send off for apostillization (notorized copies of my diploma, notorized copies of my certificate) that I'm just going to wait and send everything all at once.

Does anyone know of a website that spells out exactly what is required on a background check? Must it match up with a home state? Notarized AND apostilled? For my March 2008 contract I needed neither.

http://www.asktheconsul.org/E2ec07.htm

They have all the info.

or FBI if you need that instead of local - not sure on that, but an "FBI check" search should find it; there's only one form of FBI check, and it takes forever from what I've heard, even to get one IN the states...
