Hi,
I've never been to Daejeon but considering a job there.
Problem is the school seems to be a little on the outskirts of town but not sure....
....Gwanpyeong-Dong, Yuseong-Gu......kinda near Export Park I think.
Anyone know if this is a decent area to live????....easy to get around from??? (Don't think subway goes there).
Any information on Daejeon and this area appreciated...thanks |

I have no idea where Gwanpyeongdong is, but Yuseong isn't too far from some hot spots. Yuseong definitely has a subway stop, though I don't know how far it would be from where you would be working (Yuseong is a bit sprawling).
Your best bet for Daejeon, no matter where you live, is to get a bus/subway card and learn the bus routes. For starters, just learn how to get to Dunsan (has no subway stop), Gungdong (also has no subway stop), Eunhaengdong (this is the downtown area, it's close to the main train station, and it has a subway stop nearby). Those are the three liveliest spots in town as far as foreigners and bars are concerned (and really, there's not much to Korea besides bars, bars, bars, and the occasional temple).
You can get English bus and subway maps from city hall, but I would ask your school if they could get those for you. It might be too much trouble for you to try find city hall, but it shouldn't be much trouble at all for them. If your school isn't willing to do something as basic as that, that's a pretty good indicator that you might wanna think about looking elsewhere for employment. |

Daejeon is the largest city dead center in the middle of Korea. It is gorgeous, clean, metropolitan...it's my favourite city behind Busan and Daegu, and it's in the running for second place by virtue of the KTX stop. You want this job. |

Well I wouldn't go so far as to call it 'gorgeous' and 'clean,' but it's not bad by Korean standards. Unless you live in one of the rich parts of town like Mannyeondong, you're going to see the following: litter everywhere; cracked, broken, and dirty bus stop shelters and window panes everywhere; and the slight impression of grime and general disrepair exuding from almost every building in the city. But then again, it's gonna be like that pretty much no matter which part of Korea you inhabit.
Straphanger is right about the location, though. Being almost dead-center in the middle of the country and located on the KTX line means it's pretty quick and easy to get anywhere you could possibly wanna go. An hour to Seoul, an hour to Busan, 30-45 minutes to Daecheon (that's where the Mud Festival is)... not too bad. |

I live in Daejeon so I might be able to help
first off to the original poster, can you please tell us a little bit about your background? How old are you? Have you lived abroad before? are you just out of college
So I like Daejeon, it has a lot of good point, and some bad points
My advice would be this
if you are young, fresh out of college, never lived abroad and/or never lived in a big city then I would say go to Busan or Seoul. Those are huge metropolitan cities where you will have a blast. I lived in London, UK last year and loved it (I had just graduated)
Had I not lived in london before this then I dont think I would like daejeon that much.
Daejeon is nice if you have lived somewhere big before and you dont need that huge city feel. It is generally clean (espiecally around Dunsan dong) nice people, great transportation to other parts of the city, and you can get anywhere in the city generally for 5,000 won or less via taxi
There is still a lot of fun stuff to do in daejeon but like i said if u are just out of college and espiecally from a smaller, rural town then i would go to busan or seoul first
oh and that part of town u mentioned is a bit run down, poorer and the kids could be a bit rougher. There are TONS of hagwons in Dunsan dong right by the city hall subway stop. nicest and richest part of daejeon, very clean and modern, I love living here |

I live in Gawnpyeong dong right now.
Its allright. It is a little bit dirtier and more run down then other parts of
Daejeon, but there are bus stops that can get you to the nice parts very
easily. The kids are a little rougher/less interested in schooling over all.
Overall though, I enjoy it. The people tend to be nice, and yes, from Daejeon you can get to Seoul or Busan easily. |

I think you need to re-read the OPs post again lol...
I'm pretty sure the OP already lives in Korea and is just considering a job in another city (Daejeon).
Also, look at his join date... He's been a dave's member for 2 years, I'm pretty sure he's not just right out of college. |
