I used my laptop last night with no problems. This morning, I tried to turn it on and it won't start. The XP logo would start, but then I get a blank screen and an incessant beeping (like someone fell asleep at the keyboard).

I tried restarting in safe mode, last known configuration, etc. Nothing worked. My laptop is fairly old, but I really don't want to buy a new one in Korea. I think I need to reformat, but I don't have the windows XP cd with me. I left it back home. Any suggestions???

...and i'm not very computer literate. Thanks.

Those beeps mean something.

If it's doing constant short beeps then you can look up what that means on the manufacturers website. Or find what it means by downloading the manual for your particular model of laptop.

yes to what Eamo said.

The beeps like that are usually a hardware error. Sad

If it's a hard drive crash, that's not a big deal. Just install a new hard drive and reinstall windows from a USB drive. I'm sure you would have a friend who could help you do this, and if not, someone in Yongson could do it for you. No reason to buy a new laptop if all you need is a hard drive and just want it for the internet.

The other day I woke up and my windows wouldn't start, becuase I tried to open them and forgot I had locked them to prevent theft of my Windows based internet surfing machine.

I bet your hard disk is on the fritz. Robot says, "back your shit up now while it still works!" I've seen this several times where a computer won't boot and then you try several times and it does, but every time you get it to boot, it requires more attempts until finally it's game over at some unpredictable point. It also may boot up and run, but everything will just freeze up when the hard disk quits for good should it permanently quit while the machine is on. It's like suspended animation with no play button.

OP, are you hearing a tiny screeching or high pitched sound? If so, it's hard disk failing.
