Drunken Passengers Lunge Kills Cabbie

By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

A drunk male passenger grabbed the steering wheel of a taxi he was riding in, causing it to cross the center line and crash into another taxi, killing the driver and leaving four people ― from both cabs ― injured, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred Monday at 11:20 p.m. on an underground road in Mok-dong, western Seoul.

Police said the taxi suddenly crossed the centerline and smashed into the deluxe taxi, whose driver was killed at the scene. The driver of the other taxi and three passengers from both vehicles were injured.

The surviving driver testified that the passenger, sitting next to him, tried forcefully to grab his taxi's steering wheel.

``He suddenly turned the wheel, while I was driving,'' the driver said.

The alleged perpetrator told the police that he was intoxicated and couldn't remember what happened.

Is it the first time a taxi has been attacked in Seoul?

Maybe its time for them to install protection...

If the culprit uses intoxication as an excuse - and gets off because "he showed remorse and was intoxicated" - it would be typical - but a shame.

Hopefully this will put an end to passengers sitting in the front seat in the first place. But it wont.

I almost always sit in the front seat. If the back seat had a seatbelt I would sit there. But it usually doesn't. So I usually don't.
