In a 2008 review of the data used in Lynn's book, Hunt and Wittmann[10] write:
"The majority of the data points were based upon convenience rather than representative samples. Some points were not even based on residents of the country. For instance, the data point for Suriname was based on tests given to Surinamese who had migrated to the Netherlands, and the data point for Ethiopia was based on the IQ scores of a highly selected group that had emigrated to Israel and, for cultural and historical reasons, was hardly representative of the Ethiopian population. The data point for Mexico was based upon a weighted averaging of the results of a study of Native American and Mestizo children in southern Mexico with result of a study of residents of Argentina. Upon reading the original reference, we found that the data point that Lynn and Vanhanen used for the lowest IQ estimate, Equatorial Guinea, was actually the mean IQ of a group of Spanish children in a home for the developmentally disabled in Spain. Corrections were applied to adjust for differences in IQ across cohorts (the Flynn effect), on the assumption that the same correction could be applied internationally, without regard to the cultural or economic development level of the country involved. While there appears to be rather little evidence on cohort effect upon IQ across the developing countries, one study in Kenya (Daley, Whaley, Sigman, Espinosa, & Neumann, 2003[11]) shows a substantially larger cohort effect than is reported for developed countries." |

Thinking about to the bell curve and standard deviation this map indicates that the average IQ is less than 100 for the world and that China Japan and Korea are the only countries with the middle ground as a group. It also shows that Australia and Botswana as a whole are retarded. Seeing as how IQ is relatively scored I would like to have seen the tests that were given as well as the samples for these before trusting in this map one iota.
In short, your student should go back to Botswana. |

During break today two teachers were comparing their IQ's. The Australian said his was 150 and the Korean-Australian said his was 147. I had to wonder: Do all countries use the same tests? I wonder because, although both guys are bright, they don't seem to be in the 150 range. That's genius level where I come from. |

I am Australian....
In Australia - I also got 160 for my IQ score.
Recently did the test again here - (in Korea) - my IQ was only 130. |

This is not a good trend. 30 points down is significant. This may lend credence to the claim that alcohol destroys brain cells. (You are Australian.)

I scored a 147 on the only I.Q. test I ever took, but I believe that's because I was always pretty good at taking tests (I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person, but certainly not a genius). After completing it, I intuitively felt that it was likely inherently flawed.
As a student, I was always known for not studying (I was always reading books of my choice rather than the assigned material), but I could take tests in my classes and still get A's and B's. I'm naturally just good at that stuff, but what about a person that may be more intelligent that I but hasn't had the same chance to develop their whitebread-oriented test-taking skills?
Koreans are very test-score oriented. There have been many threads here in the past with news reports of the Korean gov't fudging the numbers. These include widespread reports of the government selectively not including results from schools that do not perform well.
I know Korean kids spend an inordinate amount of time studying, and I would expect them to score well, but even so we know how competitive Koreans are. It should come as no surprise that they would play around with reported overall I.Q. scores in cases where national pride could potentially be on the line. |
