For quite some time, a copy of the Korean spouse's family registry (ho-jeok deung-bon) was one of the necessary documents when renewing one's F-2 visa. It seems that this has changed.
Now that the family registry system has changed (and apparently split into five separate parts), the Seoul Immigration Office told us that the certificate of marriage (hon-in jeung-myeong-seo) will suffice in place of the family registry.
They also interestingly told us a little about the "it's up to the individual immigration officer" business that many Dave's denizens have posted about (for example here) with respect to the length of the renewal period:

It seems hard to believe, but the Seoul Office told us yesterday that the period of the extension really is indeed "according to the immigration officer's opinion".
We're renewing on Tuesday. To facilitate a lengthy extension, this is the plan:
1. Go early in the day, early in the week (to avoid tired immigration officers).
2. Dress nicely, but not too nicely.
3. Appear to be in love. (Can I borrow someone's kid?)
4. Say something like: "It would really help us a lot, sir/ma'am, if you could find it in your heart to grant us a two year extension." |

Spot on advice. Good luck.
Referring to
#1 always best to get 'em fresh.
#2 Don't look like a slob, however no immi official is going to want to be particularly helpful to some foreigner that is wearing a suit that costs more than his monthly salary.
#3 I just had to laugh.
By the way I just got mine extended a couple weeks ago. Three year extension on the visa, so it is possible to get up to that. The certificate for re-entry is only good for two years though. |

| I can only speak from my own personal experience, but one can get a two year renewal if you have children. That was pleasant news. |

Well I guess it depends how old the couple are. If they are only in their 30's it wouldn't be very believable they have a 22 year old. I think they need an infant.
I don't think immigration would be stupid enough to fall for it anyway. |
