What kind of books are best for teaching lower level students? I, personally, think a listening book with pictures and simple words are better than reading books since it's hard for them to understand the vocabulary in the books.

Can you name a series of books for lower level students?
With my lowest level kids I am using Let's go 1 to 3, and that's fine.
What about kids somewhat higher than that.

I think listening/speaking books are the best. I want some recommendations.

Let's Go is a good series, as is Backpack. The latter has loads of great activities.

There are lots of great phonics books for very low level learners.

I think I heard of the Back Pack series. It seems familiar. I am not sure if my bookstore carries it. It's kind of bad. I will go into Seoul and check out Kyobo and see if they have it. Anyway, is it good for lower level kids. Let's Go is fine for my lowest.

I like Smart Choice. Easy to use and easy to add onto. The grammar explanation is a bit short in the sections, but there is a further explanation at the back. Some of the units do suck.

Also, I like New Cutting Edge, which covers all of the skills and is popular amongst the CELTA crowd.

Magic Time 1 & 2!
Loads of listening, fun songs and chants, relevant color, cut, paste, play activities.
The books are colorful and fun.
As long as the boss and/or Mums don't make you rush through it, it's an awesome series (proceeds to English Time 1~*.)

Thanks for your feedback... I will print all the suggestions and go to Kyobo and look at them all and see. I just think a foreign teacher should avoid teaching reading unless the kids are more advanced or extremely motivated because Koreans usually teach reading, right? They can explain words I can't. It's also easier to keep the attention of kids when you're using listening/speaking books.

I wouldn't suggest going to Kyobo if you want to look for books. There is a bookstore at Gangnam Stn called Kim and Johnson's that has a huge selection of EFL/ESL books. I haven't looked around the adult section but the kids' section is fantastic. It's in the building right at the corner of the intersection at Gangnam Stn at exits 5 and 6, downstairs.

Adventurer,

Why not use low level leveled readers? You can print thousands, just fold and you have a book for the students who can draw, label, underline, share. Cheap and sharable. Many have worksheets also. Get them on our community under Resources and Reading - Leveled readers.

there are also loads of ebooks with sound for low level readers. Just click and play.

I'd also suggest this site www.tarheelreader.org PM me if you want the code to make a book but they are repetitive in many cases (check out the Alphabet category). Part of my own interest in using technology for the learning disabled with ELLs.

Cheers,

DD

PS. Did anyone else here catch Krashen's recent letter to the Korea Herald tut tutting Korea for spending so much on native speakers when the country should be spending more on libraries and reading material Smile

Has anyone used either English Land or Hip Hip Hurray books?
I saw them at the bookstore, and they seem appropriate.
A friend uses them at his hagwon.

I like the seesaw series for lower level students. It's got songs, themed units, listening and speaking. Also, it has ongoing stories and few enough characters so that you can remember who all of the characters are. Mr. Snoop is the greatest villain of all time.

I like English Land. I have been using reading books. Some of the kids found my classes slightly challenging. However, they learn a ton, but the problem is if you don't pay attention you might not understand what's going on. A few students said the books were hard, so my boss got on my case. I have been explaining things slowly to make sure the kids really understand, giving them definitions homeworks, trying to switch around books to see what will work, but it's tough with being sandwiched between parents, a boss, and the teachers, but I am enjoying my job, I will say. I am learning a lot from this hagwon job.

Genetically altered to be superior to homosapien-sapiens? Well, of course.
