I was wondering if anybody living currently in South Korea is worried about the threats North Korea is making. I am schedule to come over in mid-march, I'm getting kind of worried about the threats myself and I'm not even there yet. How does everyone else feel?

The north has been acting up a bit lately, but it seems to happen when they're trying to get attention. I certainly don't trust their leadership, but I highly doubt they'd ever do something really stupid that would put us in danger.

The pattern is that whenever North Korea want more oil and rice, they start threatening war. It's been an ongoing thing for years now.

The problem now is that South Korea has a government and a president who will ignore North Korea. He's a right-winger. President Lee is a very dangerous man. He hates communism. He's a high and mighty christian. Basically, he's the Korean George W. Bush.

A war with the Norks is highly unlikely...........but if any South Korean president can provoke it it....it's this one..

We, korean don't even give much attention on them, that is their way to get attention from Washington, it's been that way for last 50+ years.
Really it's no big deal.

Does anyone care? Probably in Japan, China, and the US. Not really here though.

I wouldn't worry about it. NK used to say similar things even back in '84 when I first came to the country. As mentioned above, they generally become bellicose when they want something from the int'l community (food, oil, attention, etc.). A lot of it is for their own domestic consumption.

NK is great on verbal threats, but very weak on overt action (the last great one I remember is the 1987 KAL bombing). As I've told my folks over the years, "When I start to worry, then you can start to worry."

There could well be a skirmish in the DMZ or a small naval battle in the West Sea, but unless the South over-reacts, it won't be more than that. The Norks are in no position to take on both SK and the US. As long as the alliance is in effect the North will follow its strategy of the last 60 years--talk big, act small enough not to get themselves wiped out.

To my understanding, the South has the capacity to obliterate the North should it come down to the 2 brothers having another fight. While the South would had lost 50 years ago had it not been for foreign military intervention, today's South Korea is highly developed.

I'm wondering what the South would do if the North shot a missile that hit a South Korean city. I'd hope the South would just go up there and kick their asses and then just take over. Command and Conquer.

I'm really not worried about the Norks, but they do annoy me. If something like a missile attack does happen, who's going to stand for it and let it go on? It will be dealt with swiftly. South Korea also has robotic defenses armed to the teeth along the borders and strategic points as well as a great deal more hardware with 1 million soldiers and several powerful allies.

the NoKo's r so predictable with their negotiating tactics and empty threats there have been a number of books written on them that diplomats have to read before coming here.

im more curious than anything to just see how the transition of power changes things, if it does anything at all. just like the son, the grandson may have these grand ambitions but when he gets used to the spoils of being at the top, he may end up like several dictators before him and just get lazy living the good life while his people suffer.

OP, have no fear. when we hear bluelake jumped ship, them u can start sweatin it.

Is there really any reason why North Korea would even want to bomb South Korea these days? How would it benefit them at all to do it? Why would they?

That already happens. The only NK dictator who actually fought for something was old man Kim Sung Il. Little Jong has just been enjoying the ride.

LOL! What a bunch of shit!

1. The President of South Korea is not "ignoring" NK. He has clearly stated that he is not going to deal with them (give in) under these circumstances..............you know, go along with the "sunshine policy" that has "worked" oh, so well.

2. A right winger..................OK, care to elaborate, rather then throw "right winger" out on the table as if to appear you are some political messiah?

3. He hates communism........well, most people don't know what communism really is. Would it make you feel better if he liked it or praised it? Is it a crime to hate communism in South Korea?

4. A high and mighty christian........................so, where does this fit in regarding to his presidential agenda? Thats nothing more then a "gotcha distraction".

5. The Korean George Bush................yeah, finally someone with some balls to stand up to the norks and let them know that their old games are not going to get results anymore.

ANYWAY..........................I think it is an all out possibility that NK may start some shit. OR, put the allied forces (U.S./S.K.) into a position where they MUST use some force. That way, it makes NK look like the innocent victim being plunged by the capitalist pigs.

NK is dangerous. Their backs are up against the wall. To assume they won't do anything is not wise. Sooner or later.........they will have to back up their threats.

By the way, I think South Korea's president is doing a good job concerning NK. Why give them more money when they constantly break promises?
