So, I got my nice new office (couch, window, no administration looking over my shoulder) that I share with one co-teacher. Since it's just the two of us I'm supposed to answer the office phone if she's out of the room. Guess how many calls are for me?
It's just a fun experience when I pick up the phone and say 'Hello?"
There's this pregnant pause where I know the Korean teacher is thinking "Oh, f&^#! It's the foriegner, what do I do?"
Of course I could answer in my limited Korean, but what fun would that be. |

You've never heard that expression?
I just means a longer than normal pause, an uncomfortable one.
Like when you're out with a girl on a first date and she says she likes shopping and you respond that you want to see her 'shopping' crumpled up on your bedroom floor.
. . . . . . . . . . . . (pregnant pause)

I've never worked a job where I could pick up the phone and just say hello. What kind of job is this where you do that? Kinda unprofessional, don't you think? |

Uh, I'm a teacher. I have a work office with a phone for our 2 desks. Since every korean person answers their phone with 'Ahn-Nyong-Ha-Se-Yo ' I think I can answer likewise.
But, as the resident internet expert on professionalism I really would like your permission. |

I'll just have to assume what scrumping means?
lol, no, in fact her back was hurting today so I was a nice officemate and walked downstairs 5 floors to get a heatpad for her. But now that I'm hanging out for my nightclass I'm on the couch watching a little Indiana Jones on the laptop. |

I don't even bother answering phones and they don't expect me to answer phones as pretty much no one around here speaks English. |

I've gotten to the point now that whenever my cell phone rings, I hand it to one of my students to answer so they can inform the caller that his or her teacher doesn't speak Korean fluently and that they probably have the wrong number. |

I think he is referring to the fact that Koreans would answer with '여보세요' |

me too! At first I just let it ring because I knew it couldnt be for me. Then a student ran into the room panting (having just climbed 5 floors of stairs) and said 'answer the phone!'
That was 4 weeks ago and has been my one and only phone call. And, to boot, it was from my officemate. |

As you obviously have cameras implanted in the walls of my school, please inform me who they answer the phone. I'd love to know.
I also thought I heard some Koreans just answer with 'Anyo', but I'm not sure. Did they? What did you hear at my school.
Wow.
Does it hurt to be you? |
