|
|
At my middle school, all the boys are required to hand in all their cells & MP3s to the homeroom teacher at the beginning of every day. Toward the end of last term, I confiscated my first cell phone in over a year and a half at the school (the co-teacher was not there and the stupid kid thought he'd 'try me on'). After class, the student begged and pleaded for his phone back.. but I told him to get it from his homeroom teacher and took it to the staffroom. When I gave it to the homeroom teacher, he grinned and said in Korean "Ten days."... LOL. I found out then that keeping confiscated electronics for ten days before returning them is the school's official policy.
What does your school do? |

Good story. No rule where I work, I just have them put them away and take them if they're out. I then give it to a foreign teacher who usually give it back before they go home. I think I'll start pushing for your schools policy |

I just take them and smash them on the floor and continue teaching like nothing happened. |

Warning at the beginning of the year is this, first offence, 1 day (but if your class is Friday...too bad, you'll get in Mon. morning), second offence is 1 week. Works well. Never had a third offence in 3 years. |

Some HR teachers lock them up for two weeks; some are a bit less harsh. If I take one and the student apologises and makes no fuss, she gets to write out:

30 times and can get it back at the end of the day. This once increased to 100 in the case of a student who was stupid enough to try talking on her phone in class. If the student does make a big fuss about it or try to hide it and deny playing with it, it may well go to the HR teacher with my complaints. Once when that happened a student was begging me two weeks later to ask her homeroom teacher if she could have it back, so it must have been taken fairly seriously.
It's also cute how how if I've taken one away they'll try to find me after school when no other teachers, especially their homeroom teacher, are around so that no one else finds out they were hiding their phone in class. |

I've seen students using something electronic. I ask for it. They've quickly hidden it and say they aren't using anything. I ask them to stand up and move away. 9/10 the phone is on the chair open with a text half written.
At this point, I state that the student is clearly a liar and shows no respect for the rules or myself.
It's this point I take the phone, open the window and throw it out (I've actually done this). I later state that respect goes both ways, and if they ever lie to me again I will no longer have them in my class.
No complaints at all about doing that (it happens rarely).

Yeah, there are still some jobs where you don't have to put up with BS if you don't want to. |

my school has a rule that they cant have them too.
i tell them if i see them message in my class i take the phone for a month.
if they try to refuse or lie, it becomes two months.
although, i will listen after i take the phone. like sometimes they wanted to check the time. i will check if they had any incoming or outgoing messages, if not, i let them keep it. the point is the respect. give me the phone when i ask, and i will listen after class.
i know this is harsh, but i usually only need to confiscate one phone a year. |

They get it taken away for a month. If they talk back to the teacher, two months. Many a wailing students can be seen and heard in the teachers' office each week. You'd think they would just learn. |
