Hello.
It seems there is always discussion here about what food you guys miss while in Korea. I have a basic question. As far as raw goods grociery type stuff... what is Korea missing? I mean, and I don't mean to sound out of it, I just truly don't know... Can you get, milk, eggs, pasta, potatoes, basic spices,... et cetera? I mean I know some things must be tuff... peanut butter, ranch, et cetera... but what about the bare basics?
I lived in Holland for a year, so I know the pains of missing things that you would never thought you'd be without...(flavored coffee creamer...) But all in all, the basic 'normal' bland/boring/standard/white people food was around.
thanks! |

Hi There,
You may find it surprising compared to other countries. For example you can get milk, eggs and pasta (generally only regular spaghetti noodles) fairly easily.
Cheese is another commodity and the price of it is indicative.
For basic spices you may need to go to a department store.
Peanut butter is no big problem as long as you don't mind paying a bit..some corner bakeries even have it.
Ranch is becoming more readily available at department stores but sour cream is still difficult at times.
They have a lot of fruit and veg here but mainly the stuff that grows here or is seasonal, might be radish and cabbage rather than iceberg lettuce and brussell sprouts. Lots of mung beans and Korean veggies are plentiful but it is just that certain ones are hard to find.
Living in a bigger city will help you to get a better range. Daejeon seemed to lose the ability to get the fresh stuff during the winter a bit and it is big.
Advocados for example are available but are rare and cost like $5 for one or two.
Celery and carrots general stuff like onions are quite easy. Some meat products like lamb are are difficult to come across. Pork is not a problem (unless you like chops) and they import beef, more expensive. Seafood also is a little different.
People are sometime surprised by the lack of an oven at home for
cooking.
I suggest if you feel you will miss it, come to a city, then you will have access to modern supermarkets. Some people like Costco, a membership could help fill the gap for bulk shopping.
If you live in the city, with luck you may be able to say to a taxi driver...
'Costu co' (Costco)
Or
"Homu Plusu" (home plus!)
These two chains are where you can find much of the extras and I actually found frozen desserts and pricey cheesecake at home plus the other day.

Don't have a place for a grill and the flat lacks an oven, what do you suggest or what do folks usually do? |

I will be buying a small cheap grill. There are plenty of places around to use it to cook. Next to the mini-mart across from my apartment is a small clearing that the ajosshis use to grill. I figure, I will carry it out there and do the baked potato on the grill. The roof is another option ... |
