| My husband is coming to visit me from hell (=Iraq) and I want to show him a good time while he's here. One of our favorite things to do is to go clubbing. I haven't been out much here (once to be exact) and the club kinda sucked. It was a ratty basement hip hop deal in Itaewon. I'm looking for the same kind of music, but something a little nicer and a better atmosphere I guess. Any ideas? We love hip hop and salsa/Latin music. I'm guessing they'll be found in Hongdae but I have no idea where to look.... |

Married women should not go to nightclubs without their husbands.
You do realize we men go to clubs for sex, don't you?
Edit: Gay clubs are okay. |

She's taking her husband, idiot.
Jeni I dunno really, I've always tried to avoid clubs as much as possible . Try this website though, www.seoulstyle.com, where you might at least get an idea of what's out there. Good luck! |

Except she is looking for hip-hop/salsa. M2 is strictly house-electro.
There are some big hip-hop clubs in Hongdae, but they're full of young punks. Actually, most hip-hop clubs in Seoul are full of young punks.
Harlem and NB near Gangnam station are okay, though. Always packed, full of good-looking girls being hit on by boys in the middle of a cultural identity crisis.
But if hip-hop is what you're looking for, and you don't want to be surrounded by soldiers and/or Nigerians, and college-aged gansta wannabes, then Gangnam NB/Harlem are decent.
Most of the gangsta wannabes there are either out of college or never went. |

I never thought I'd see the day when Harlem and NB were suggested. Much less by a veteran poster.
But, the music scene in Korea SUUUUUUCKS compared to the rest of the globalized world. Try to find a special show, not a house DJ, and even if Harlem or NB (also located in Hongdae) is your only option, you'd be better off buying a cd and playing it alone in a cheap motel. |

OI is a neat place, save for the chance of death by slipping on the floor, but have you ever seen it busy? The only time I've seen it busy was for some sort of festival, and there was ridiculous new age interpretive dancing and drumming. Not what I'd call Hip-Hop / Salsa.
If the OP had said she wanted to go to an empty club and listen to ridiculous psy-trance, OI is the best bet.
There's a latin dance place in Itaewon called Caliente. I've never been. |

Yeah, shame on me. I had to take a good, hard look at myself in the mirror this morning after posting that.
However, after she mentioned the "basement Itaewon place" and that she was looking for similar music, that's the best I could come up with. There are a few underground clubs that spin great tunes on occasion, but it didn't seem like that was up her alley. |

I'll definitely check out Caliente... what are the big hip hop places in Hongdae called?
Seoulsucker, tell me more about the underground places you know. |

I second this.
Just go to Hongdae and wander around till you find what you are looking for. So many clubs there that I don't even know the names of half of them that I've been in. Hongdae is a great area to have some spontaneous fun and you probably won't want to limit yourself to one or two clubs anyways. It's like a big Disney land for partying. I'm sure you're husband will love it after being in Iraq. |
