|
|
My school recently got a new import and they were set out to start work this morning. Only, they didn't show up. I assumed that they were out of a walk and got lost. Well, it seems that they went for a longer walk than I first thought. They "walked" to the airport and is now on their way home.
Now I have no idea why they choose this, but I have to admit: I feel offended.
I take pride in my job and to see it treated as a cheap ticket to visit another country really offends me.
End of mini-rant. |

They arrived Thursday and left Sunday. Didn't even try the job. All I can say is the only reason that I would accept is if there was a family emergency. |

wow, that's a joke!! It would of hurt them to go in and talk over their problems with the school, obviously it is not a bad place to work if you are still there and thy didn't even give it a chance! |

I wish it was a joke. The school really needs a new teacher. I don't understand it. To go through the whole trouble of weeding your way through the process only to bail less than a 100 hours later? Does not comput. |

Well, we really don't know what happened. The person could have spoke to the person who then told them exactly what they were going to be doing, and maybe it wasn't what they originally expected. Imagine coming to a new country to do A and then be told, oh by the way, you'll be doing B, even though that's not something you would have accepted had we told you that. I almost pulled a runner in my first week because of health problems; the school where I started fired the only person who spoke both English and Korean, and I had an immediate health problem that needed instant attention (ended up in the emergency room), and the Korean only speakers didn't seem to realize it was an emergency, not some random "oh I forgot my favorite teddy bear" problem.
I'm glad I was able to stick it out. There have been other problems since then (like the job not paying for a month), but sometimes those sorts of things happen. It's definitely helped me stretch my flexibility meter. |

I understand that there are reasons for eveything, it just bugs me not knowing exactly what set them off. I've have met them over the weekend and they seemed like a good person. It just doesn't add-up for me. |

We don't know the situation and why they left. I was promised things and when I got here, I was told ultimatums.
I also experienced other side. While 10 Korean teachers and 4 Canadians didn't get paid from a school we all taught at, I got paid by the new owner who refused to pay the other teachers because they said they were only responsible for paying "their" teachers. They thought they could go until November and not pay any of the teachers who were hired under the previous owner, LOL (there are like only 4 or 5 left now).
So, while you feel you are being treated fairly, you don't know how other teachers are being treated. |

I see your point, but I highly doubt that this was the case. Mainly becuase of the time frame in which it happened. Less than 100 hours between arrival and departure. My guesses are either family emerengcy or cold feet. And honestly, I hope it was just cold feet because I wouldn't wish a family emerency on anyone. |

Give the runner the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they walked into their "apt.," and it's 6X6 feet of space, saw that the walls were moldy, the bathroom had an inch of sewage on the floor and roaches were crawling all over the place, courtesy of the last FT who did not clean.
They then remembered that the OP had said that the living arrangements were GREAT! and that everything was wonderful. After a 10-20 hour flight, the first thing they saw- apt., was terrible, so they ran.
This is all speculation, but probably true.
I've seen it happen. I hope it happens more often. Maybe if it happens enough, the directors/principals will start to treat new meat a little better. Perhaps a pick up from the airport, a few days stay in a decent hotel while they recover from jet lag, a guaranteed clean living area.....
Anyway, keep the E-2s comin and keep em running.... more money for F visas! j/k better conditions and all that BS... Hey ATEK, come on and get in on this one. Less controversy than that last crap you pulled. |

Well given:
1. The crappiest won rate since IMF.
2. North Korea threatening war.
It's no wonder people are running. We had 2 out of 3 new hires decide not to honor their contract at our university. I heard a rumor that Soongsil had more than that cancel out in the final weeks of winter break.
Things are getting pretty horrible for schools trying to hire. |

good. I hope the trend continues.
There aren't many of us who seem to be able to stand up for ourselves, by ourselves. Imagine a situation where the only FTs left were the hardened, weathered guys who know the score or the first timers who were not first time workers and had a little common sense.
Imagine how many hagwons would fail miserably or quickly change their policies and raise their wages; how many PSs would end desk warming and divert the bad K-co-teachers away from the good FTs, and how many universities would end their uni-wons, raise pay and guarantee/ allow their good teachers to stay for more than a few years. Ahhhh, we can dream.
Anyway, there's a fresh batch of runners getting on the plane someone in one of the magic English countries. Let's just hope that most of them will run, or have a backbone. |

was thier apt bad? my friends had roaches and she got headlice
and ran the first week. Could you blame her?
Do you know the living conditions she was in? Just because
you got a decent apt doesn't mean she did. (or he) |
