I would strongly suggest you drop the 'sparkling' bit from the title if your new guide. Using a country's brand image slogan in your new book that may go against the original idea of 'Korea Sparkling' can get you into some serious hot water.

Then again, you may not be here long enough to get that far.

Ah yes, I was waiting with bated breath to see how Chicken would respond to his mortal enemy's recent publication, and I'm disappointed. A vague legal opinion is the best you can do?

Sparkling Korea?

They are taking the piss. It's a joke, and will be considered offensive by those who must not me named Kimberly.

The guy responsible for this "sparkling" slogan is trying desperately to distance himself from the mess.

I heard he charged Korea six figures.

Actually, I consider it offensive. I also consider the term 'kimberly' to be offensive. No it is not a recognized derogatory term. The intent of its use is clear enough to me though. As is the inclusion of the 'sparkling' in Tony's publication.

No I'm not a 'defender of the Han' I do have a wife that is Korean and a son, and I find you and your language to be an offensive.

Tony should remove the little 'joke' from his title.

Everyone should THANK ATEK for putting a guidebook for teachers together and offering it to EVERYONE for FREE.

This is the kind of thing that SHOULD have been done YEARS ago.

OP, there's NOTHING wrong with ATEK doing this. It benefits EVERYONE. If YOU have a problem with a FREE guidebook for foreigners living in Korea, FEEL FREE to put together your own guidebook. UNTIL THEN, be happy that ATEK finally did it. In fact, read it. You may learn something that will save you time and/or money. Wink

It's nothing that can't be figured out after a year or even six months of living here. Hardly warrants an entire book.

But newbies and people coming TO Korea usually have no one to help them and they need this kind of advice. This will help them.

Do you know how to read? The problem isn't with Tony. It is with the sarcastic little title he put on his publication. The problem has never been with Tony personally, it has always been about the actions he has taken. Actions that have not been well thought out, reckless, and in this case juvenile.

Agreed. It's always nice to have a guide. Unfortunately, guides are dated the moment they are printed and circumstances change constantly, businesses close, places and rules change.

This is nothing more than ATEK trying to lure membership by being the only person here who's trying to help the new guy into their corner, and perhaps start charging for membership again? Wink

You can never tell. But as far as the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT goes...this is a total yawn.

A guide of some kind is needed, but it is a shame if the "Sparkling Korea" was used in a sarcastic way in their recent publication. I haven't seen the publication and won't bother clicking on any links to read it. It seems like removing that small bit would be a good step forward for ATEK in terms of building creditability.

Do you know it was sarcastic? (Not saying it was or wasn't... but isn't it possible it was just used as a half-hearted slogan like slapping "Land of the Free" on a brochure about America or something.)

For the most part, I didn't think the guide portrayed Korea in a negative light. (I obviously have little idea how accurate it is, though many points I've read elsewhere before, regularly.)

Wow, talk about sensitive.

I'm not offended at all by the "sparkling" bit. The kimberly thing is stupid, but not really offensive.

I too have a Korean wife and we have a daughter. And, I make fun of Korea and Koreans on a daily basis. I make fun of people from the canadia, blacks, republicans, christians, arabs, the French, people from the UK, Africans and African'ts, Mexicans, slavics, gyopos, (especially gyopos), and ze germans on an almost daily basis.

Just 'cause you married a Korean, doesn't mean you need to get all culturally super sensitive. lighten up.
