Hmmmm...
Hard one.
75% agree
25% disagree
I had a teacher of chemistry (totally out side my major) who was so excited and enthusiastic about this stupid tube of black stuff that would suddenly turn orange, that we were all riveted like it was a magic trick... and a teacher of "Evolution, Revolution and Change"... which should have been so exciting... put the class to sleep.
It depends on how much leway the teacher is given. If they can do it their own style, and try to add things that the agegroup will like... then yea 100%.
But no matter how much enthusiasm you have for your subject, when you can't bring in more materials to give it personality... it's gonna suck. |

slogans are just slogans
Sometimes the materials really really suck. And if you are required to stick to them that is gonna be bad no matter the teacher.
Also, yeah - you may be able to spice up anything going all out. But this is a job - a marathon, not a sprint. We have good days and bad days - lots of bad days. So just because you could in theory make bad materials work on a really good day doesn't mean you can make them work most days. |

Disagree. If you're limited to these materials and nothing else, and they suck, you are screwed. |

I taught a series called 'American Hotline', which made me want to perform a frontal lobotomy on myself.
I say that boring materials exist. |

w/a class of disinterested students
a teacher that's not appreciated/abused/underpaid/overworked
a classroom environment that's not conducive to learning because its temp is too hot, too cold, stuffy air, whatever
and then throw in resources that are uninspiring, inappropriate for the students' level or simply inadequate
LOTs of reasons the boredom bell can ring |
