I've been away from Korea for a while, and will be coming back in June/July for a P.S. job.- hopefully in Gangwondo- 4 years in Seoul was enough! However things have changed since I was last in Kr., namely the background check. Here's the problem:

My police check shows a driving disqualification, fines, 100 hrs community service etc. All from 2000.

Am I screwed?

I have to be careful, 'cos I'm giving up a very good job here to return, I'm going back for a bit because I like the place- not because we need the $$, however I don't want to quit a good job and then be unable to work in Korea thus making myself unemployed.

And by yes he means "it depends."

I know many foreign teachers here that have an actual DUI *conviction* on their record. They're just fine here.

Depends on if all that stuff from 2000 will show up on a background check from another state.

Let me put it another way. Would YOU want your kids being taught by a person who's been found drinking and driving (they got caught once....but very likely have done it many times b4 they got caught)?

No.

I wouldn't either.

Calling it a 'mistake' is an utter copout and not accepting any responsibility. You drink and drive. That shows an inherent lack of judgement on your part. I have yet to hear "I think it's OK for drunk drivers to be teaching kids. After all, they aren't in a car so what's the big deal?"

Translation: Plz stay away from my kids.

Just ignore Chicken lover please. He tries to play the moral high ground and can be really arrogant at times. It really depends on the immigration officer. I do know people here that were concerned about the same thing (DUI/DWI) and still got a VISA. I do believe they had to explain their situation though. We all make mistakes and even though what you did was wrong it was forever ago. A DUI is much different than illegal drug offenses, sexual charges and other violent felonies. I say give teaching here a try and again ignore some of the people on this board. Very Happy

Of course they could teach my kid. It has nothing to do with it. People make mistakes. In many places, drinking while a little buzzed is normal, and when you're young you're naive and you don't understand the consequences, or maybe you don't have the best influences in your life. That alone shouldn't hurt a person's chances at having a future and finding happiness.

RedRob, see if you can get the charge expunged. It might be possible depending on where you are from. That would solve the problem right away.

ChickenRooter: Shut up.

Other folks: I went to see a lawyer today, and here ( not USA) we have one nationwide database, and getting the thing expunged just ain't gonna happen.

So, what now? Anyone have a similar conviction AND gained employment in the ROK?

Thanks J-82, my main prob. is getting everything sorted before I quit my well paid job. In these economic times I can afford the pay cut to come to Korea, but I can't afford to be unemployed!

Why would you give up a "very good job" for something that is not a sure thing? A bird in the hand and all that. And given the exchange rate you would likely make less. I would stick with what you have...it's not like the jobs are going to dry up in a few years...
