I was just wondering if anyone's had wallpaper put in their apartment and roughly how much it costs to be installed.

I was just told it costs 200,000 won for about 18 square meters... seems a lil ridiculous to me.

Sounds about right, if not a bit of a deal. I'm guessing it'll be a white paper slap-n-dash job, too, for that price. Yeah, I know... it sounds hard to believe, but it's true.

I've papered 3 apartments now (I usually cut a deal with the school/owner where I pay over and above what white paper would be). I absolutely HATE white paper, and now that I've lived here a while, I refuse to live in a place covered in it. It's one of those personal concessions I make so that I can keep my sanity in the land of the morning calamity.

The price doesn't sound too crazy. It depends on what paper you choose, though. If you choose paper paper, it's cheaper. If you choose silk paper (my current place) it covers imperfections and overlays much better. The cheaper paper shows every little bump. Silk paper (it's more like vinyl with what must be silk designs or something) looks classy, although my wife nearly killed me as we argued what pattern to get (haha). We ended up each choosing two rooms. I chose the living room and my study, and she choose the bedroom and her study.

We just dumped a million on wallpaper for our place -- 4 rooms, basically, plus one faux-wood vinyl floor (room with the desk) and 3 ceilings.

Here are a few pics (sorry, we were unpacking after the move, and it's very messy in places):

The silk stuff is especially freaky, because they put it on and it takes 3 days to dry and tighten-up flat. It kind of hangs on the wall and bulges in places -- scares the hell out of me every time, and it amazes me the stuff dries and tightens as it does. Shop around. We had quotes between 1.4 and 1 million for the same work and paper. I can ask my wife what the phone number of the place was we got ours from. There's an area in town full of these wallpaper shops (Bangsang market is where we went, if memory serves) and we found that the busiest places out front near the subway with lots of customers are the cheapest.

I did my previous 16-pyoung apartment all in cheaper paper, and it cost maybe 350,000 to 450,000 won total? That was 3 smaller rooms and a small kitchen in an old-style villa.

Oy, we got just the plain old white stuff... 50,000 won a roll. Looks like the job will take about half to three quarters of a roll.

I've never tried doing it myself, although I've been tempted to (probably would look horrible). Yes, it's the labor that adds up. It took 3 guys all day to do this place. By the roll, it's not all so expensive. Even if you do just one wall, there is a minimum price they'll probably come out and work for. Just like us, not wanting to go teach 1 executive for one hour at 8am for just 30,000 won.

I'm wanting to wallpaper just one wall in my apartment - I have the paper and the paste but I've never papered before and to be honest I'm terrified of cocking it up.
Can I ask - did the school arrange the labour or did you find someone yourself? I'm happy to pay someone, it will probably be a half day job if that.

...wow. The wallpaper job looks terrific but, I have to say, I think it is pretty tacky. What's wrong with plan white walls? Don't you sometimes freak out when you first wake up 'cause you think you're being attacked by enormous butterflies?

Hahaha... it's not tacky. It looks much better in real life. Photos don't do it justice. Also, we hadn't hung photos/paintings yet.

The butterflies turned out nice. The wife is still planning a few more accents with butterfly stuff around the bedroom.

Yeah, I hate white wallpaper. One room is OK, but not the whole house.

To the OP: Read about how to do it online. Make sure you have a wide brush or some sort of instrument to smooth out the paper and remove the air bubbles.

Also, silk is easier to wipe clean.

Very Happy

Whenever I get out of university offered accommodation and start renting my own place, I'll want painted white walls with NO wallpaper. Is this possible in Korea?

When you use a patterned wallpaper ( like those butterflies and flowers in bassexpanders apt) there is a lot more work and material needed to match the pattterns and get everything in line. - so more wastage and labour, mean higher cost.

Plain paper with no repeating pattern is the cheapest and simplest to install.

If you want to pull the paper off, and paint it yourself Smile

I wouldn't suggest this though... I did it once, and it was a TON of work (and 3x more expensive than wall papering!!!) A friend of mine did it, and his house looked awesome, but he did it more like a very artistic, rustic look. The walls aren't smooth (at least they weren't in my place), just cement with lots of pitting and holes that you can either patch (like I did) or leave (like he did).

Oh yea... and Re: the wall paper sagging... I had someone come do it while I was out. I came home and FREAKED out that they had destroyed my walls and then just left it. The next day it was all milky smooth and even.
