My wife and I are thinking about where to live when we go back to Canada in a few years. We are from Calgary, but we are looking for a smaller city to live in. We are into outdoor activities. Probably not too small of a city.Between 10-40k is ok.

I'd head to Thunder Bay, pop. approximately 110,000 and shrinking.

If you're into camping, fishing, hiking, et cetera, it's ideal for the pristine wilderness that you can get all to yourself. You can go on a 10-day canoe trip across gorgeous lakes just an hour from downtown and you won't see anyone else the whole time.

Real estate is insanely cheap as well -- you can get a cheap 3-bedroom house for $70,000. For the same price as a 30 pyeong apartment in Gyeonggi-do, you could be living in a mansion.

The only downsides are that good jobs are tough to come by, and there's not much of a nightlife.

Just thinking out loud, how about somewhere in the south half of the Kootenay Valley?

Around ten years ago I spent a fantastic two weeks there, particularly in Nelson and Fernie. The latter will probably be too small for you, but before you write it off, the upsides are TERRIFIC powder snow and a spectacular hill, the surrounding area is spectacular, and it's not far from Calgary if you'd like to visit friends or relatives. Nelson is a little bigger (but at the absolute bottom end of your desired population base), and, like, totally cool man, if you're into, like, dancing trees and, like, far-out energy man. (Don't forget your Visine.)
