I know that for many of you, you have no power over your curriculum. For those of you that do, I have a question:
Do you assign homework? How much do you assign?
I teach English majors at a university. They have about 20 hours a week of class, and I've decided to give them next to zero homework. Why? I make them do homework assignments in class, because I think 20 hours of instruction is highly counterproductive. The students get no chance to think or digest the materials they are given, so I think it's best for me to give them little work and give them ample time to think about it. I'd like to hear thoughts from other teachers who have exposure to non-Asian--i.e. competent and conducive--learning environments. |

Homework should be used for two purposes only:
1. Preparation for class work
2. Long-term projects where it's impractical to give class time to do them |

I know at high school, even for top students, getting assigned homework done the next class is almost impossible.
Half the kids seem to lose the sheets!
I'm doing a book check every three weeks that is part of their grade--we'll see if they have any common sense or not. |
