|

Hello all you PS3 experts,
I am considering buying a PS3 and I was hoping that you could provide me with some information. I used to play a lot of video games when I was younger, but I'm not knowledgeable about these new high-tech gaming machines with hard-drives and internet connections.
1) What benefits does a hard-drive provide?
2) What kind of internet capabilities are available? What are the costs involved?
3) What does modding do for the PS3?
4) What size hard-drive is too small in your opinion?
5) Do you have any other information that you feel is pertinent to know before getting a PS3 versus another console?
I will most likely be hooking it up to a large LCD TV, so if you can provide me information about games, movies, internet issues, etc., then I would appreciate it. I really don't know what uses there are other than just straight gaming.
Thanks in advance. |

I can answer number 3 of the bat no you cannot mod a ps3
size of the harddrive, provided you are simply saving games no difference at all (plus ps3 you can just buy a new hardrive to upgrade it)
the advantage of a harddrive , well you can save games on it |

Thanks for that info, but I guess I'm mistaken.
I have seen ads on this website for guys selling modded PS3's.
What size does a game take up on the hard-drive? Does a PS3 have any other regular PC functions?
What about audio capabilities? |

The hard drive is good if you want to rip and store a lot of music or video files. It plays several (but not all) video formats. The games themselves don't take up a lot of space -- they save random stuff like stats, character info. and whatnot. Then you can download games from the Sony Store for around $10 to $30 depending (not the premiere titles that you buy on disc -- fun in-house games, mostly). Also, demos take up space if you download and play those. There are several free demos.
If you're eyeing that 40gb, then go for it if the price is right for you. You can always swap-out the hard drive with any notebook hard drive of up to at least 320gb, I think. Maybe more.
I've got the 40gb, and am down to my last 10gb, but don't use it for much other than blu-ray movies (not needed unless you have a screen that's larger than 37", IMHO). Most of my space it taken by game demos I can delete and not miss, as well as some ripped CDs.
The 40gb model of PS3 doesn't do SACD (don't worry -- you're not missing much) and isn't backwards-compatible with PS2/1 games.
The 40gb does have the smaller CPUs, which is a good thing for heat/noise. My 40gb is far quieter than my 60gb was.
The PS3 has a web browser, and you can load Linux if you follow directions properly. With that said, I find it pretty much useless as a web device.
Personally, if you're buying strictly for great gaming, I'd get the Xbox360. |

I think what model you get just depends on what you will use it for. I use my PS3 for watching Bluray movies and playing just a few game titles.
The wireless internet on the PS3 is quite nice. It's really quick. Demos and games download fast with no problems.
I have the 40GB model and have only used about 20GB. I have had it for about a year. I have a lot of demos that should be deleted, but I'm just too lazy. |

i'll explain my set-up to you as it sounds similar to what you're thinking about getting.
40GB Ps3, connected to 40" Pavv LCD TV.
Only got two games right now, Tiger woods and GTA, graphics on both are in HD and amazing, def make sure you get a good HDMI cable to connect the two.
PS3 is connected to internet via LAN cable but you can go wireless as well. I use the internet a lot for Tiger woods (online play, donwloads etc) and ive used the Palystation store a bit too for demos and add-ons.
If you have a PC you can also link it up to your PC using a media server like Simplecentre.
I'd say its def worth a buy if you're going to play it a lot, its a pretty versatile piece of kit.
Oh if you can, get a seperate charging dock for the controllers it makes things easier. |

I bought my PS3 a few months ago with the 80 GB drive. I am not much of a gamer these days and the few games I buy are for my gaming PC.
If you're only interested in games than the XBox 360 might be a better choice as there are more games available for it. If you're thinking about setting up a media server than the PS3 is a much better choice.
I have my PS3 setup to stream movies and TV shows to my Samsung large screen LCD TV 1080p HD. The PS3 has a gigabit wired ethernet connection while the Xbox 360 only has a 100 megabit ethernet connection.
Depending how the movie was encoded you might have a problem streaming through the 100 megabit connection where some movies might stop and play, (stutter problem), with HD video and audio content.
There's a free software to setup your media server on your PC, it's the best program I've used so far! You can get read about it here and download it from this link.

BTW, I bought the Spiderman Trilogy on BD and the picture and audio quality is just amazing on a 1080p HD TV. |
