I will be applying for the FBI background check soon. They give a waiting time of 12 weeks for it. I'm wondering if the people who have applied for it really waited 12+ weeks, or if the FBI is just giving themselves cushion time. What was your experience? |

MAX is 12 weeks, but some people get it in 4-6 weeks if the processing place is not busy. But I heard, most South Korean Teaching Agency require the FBI background check now because it's a nationwide background check. If that's the case, it will take longer to get a FBI background check. Most requesting agency accept the state background check and depending on the state it takes 2-3 days, if you don't have a record. If you have a record (i.e. DUI, misdemeanor) it can take much longer.
The key to the FBI background check is making sure you do the fingerprints properly on the FD-258 fingerprints card. If it gets rejected you're waiting a minimum of 4-6 weeks again.
The best thing to do is go to the police station, live scan facility or probably in other countries, the embassies if they provide that service. Let the professionals take your fingerprints. Look at the prints and if it looks smear, take another one and send in two. Just leave a note and say accept the one that you can see.
Some live scan facility can take your prints electronically and your prints wont smear. The other key is on the application, write on the envelope and application when you need it back. They might process it faster.
For the ladies, females tend to have the worst fingerprints because they have smaller fingers. The pattern on the prints won't appear as well. Your thumb has the best prints because its big. Your pinky have the worst prints because it's smaller. Also, if you have kids, the ladies tend to wash their hands a lot or wash the dishes and the prints just scrape off. Again, the only thing to do is look at your prints on the FD-258 card and if you can see your prints, the examiner of prints can see them as well.

from everyone i talked to (person at the FBI office, person at my local police station, person who works in a fingerprinting processing center) they all said it just depends on how backed up they are. For instance, if there is some deadline for teachers in the states having to get fingerprinted for something then they will be backed up. From the people i have talked to they said expect it to take around 10 weeks at this point cause they are decently backed up but who knows for sure. Just make sure you have everything done correctly so it doesn't get bounced back to you |

I'm in week number 3, will be week 4 on this coming Tuesday. I sent it EMS on Tuesday, August 17th. I have a mail forwarding service in the USA (UPS Store), as soon as they get it, they will send it. I asked them to let me know by email when it arrives. I'll post the final time it takes from Korea by EMS to my address box.
Maybe some other teachers who have sent for it will post how long it takes when they get it. That way, we can get some kind of REAL ball park figure. |

People who say it takes 12 weeks are criminals. |
