Most recently, I lived in Boston but worked in Salem, NH. I was a student loans debt collector working for a federal agency. I was responsible for collections in Missouri, which is the reason I now hate people from Missouri.
If you're from Missouri and you got behind on your student loans, chances are you had me tracking you down. Sorry about that. I'm actually not that bad of a guy. |

Oh dam, I bet that was a heartbreaking job as the Missouri grads are having a hard fruitless time and have been for quite some time as $8/hour or less is all employers are paying for the most part. You've got to go in business by investing in stocks or start a company in order to secure a professional income or just inherit from your rich daddy if not a doctor, lawyer, or other health care specialist.
Hey No_hite_pls, I too was a GIS specialist from 99 to 01 and made great money while it lasted. Good job. Was hoping and expecting it to be a great career.
Caniff, I bet you had a heavy overwhelming caseload with someone from up above breathing fire on you as the worlds smallest violin played for struggling graduates defaulting on their loans. I didn't fall behind, becuase I'm on the income contingent plan. I was smart to refinance with the Dept. of education 4 years ago and pick the income contingent in case I didn't secure a good income which I never managed since I graduated in 05'.
When I graduated, with the ridiculously slim pickings in the market, I got a job at Convergys Corporation office working the Mercedes Benz Financial account on a Unix system for $8/hour doing accounts in a high tech office looking like something from the dot com Star Trek era offering no benefits other than a low wage. Yes, it took a business degree just to get an $8/hour corporate job with no possibilities to move up as the Indians in Bangalore were groomed to be the company's young super stars. My trainer goes on trips to train them and while they get paid less, the pay is big to them and then the company throws lots of parties for them while they treated us in St. Louis like horse crap. I also went through many stents of telemarketing and cooking since 2001 to barely survive since this decade have been one tough trying tight muthafuker.
After 10 months of that nonsense at Convergys, I went to a mortgage broker just when the mortgage industry was beginning to drop out and loan officers began to leave the industry due to a lack of demand as everyone had already refinanced and were in over their heads with equity loan debt they still can't service to this day. After 6 months of fruitless refinance/equity loan sales efforts, I went retail at Dillard's to experience over a year of declining sales and hostile management stressed over declining sales performance in the store.
And I thought I'd have $2500 a month job in ESL, but the Xchange rate dropped at it's now only $1349, and holding steady since last Fall. All core blimey as my South African friend said.
Since 2001, it's all just been going to hell in a hand basket with nothing showing opportunity for growth. These are different unpredictable times we live in today, but one thing for sure, money and career is a tough behind the 8 ball kind of deal. It's not, "hey young man, come work for us, and then you end up rising up the ladder due to hard work and a healthy growing economy and industry." Degrees and jobs are simply not paying off in this economy. It didn't start recently as the news indicate, it started about 9 years ago. |
