Letter claims late actress was forced to have sex
March 16, 2009

A letter allegedly written by the actress Jang Ja-yeon days before she was found dead at her home in Bundang, Gyeonggi, claims she was forced to have sex with men, humiliated, beaten and abused with foul language.

Police said in the four-page letter addressed to her manager, surnamed Yun, Jang claimed that a former manager called Kim had verbally abused and physically assaulted her many times.

The letter was written on Feb. 28 and delivered to Yun on the same day.

Jang was found dead on March 7.

The note also states that the actress, who recently appeared in the KBS TV series Boys Over Flowers, was forced to have sex with high-profile figures in the entertainment field.

Kim is alleged in the letter to have ordered Jang to accompany a program producer on a golf trip to Thailand where she claims she was forced to serve drinks and sleep with him.

According to her older sister, Jang is thought to have been receiving treatment for depression.

She apparently left her name, signature, residents registration number and a fingerprint on the letter.

Meanwhile, police were interviewing Yun at Gyeonggis Bundang Police Precinct on Friday.

There are people who will definitely be punished, Yun said after being questioned for five hours.

The precinct, in charge of investigating Jangs death, stepped up efforts to make contact with Kim, who is currently in Japan.

Jang stated in her letter that she was assaulted and obliged to have sexual relations and serve drinks, Oh Ji-yong, the head of the criminal affairs division at the precinct, said yesterday.

Although the names of people who allegedly received the services are mentioned, we cant confirm their occupations or other personal information for now, Oh said.

The police are currently verifying the authenticity of the letter.

A few names of high-profile figures involved in the entertainment field are listed, Oh confirmed.

Jangs family has requested a thorough investigation into the case to find out the truth. The actress was found by her older sister hanging from the banister of a set of stairs in her home.

Jang played Sunny, one of a trio of mean girls who picked on the lead female character, played by Gu Hye-seon in the hit KBS?TV drama.

Police have started investigating the authenticity of a note actress Jang Ja-yeon allegedly left before committing suicide on March 8. The note said she was unable to withstand the pressure of entertaining and having sex with program directors and corporate and media executives.

The former manager of the 30-year-old actress made public her alleged handwritten letters. Jang, who recently starred in the hit drama ``Boys Over Flowers,'' was found dead in an apparent suicide at her home in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.

According to the Bundang Police Station, Jang's letter said she was beaten, forced to serve drinks, act as an escort at golf matches and coerced into sex with several program directors, CEOs and media executives.

Police said they obtained the list of names mentioned in the document but would decide on making them public after confirming whether the document in question is ``authentic.''

The police searched nine places including Jang's former and current agencies and her residence and seized the document from a broadcasting station, Saturday. The document will first go through a graphology test to confirm her handwriting and then police will investigate the content.

The letter also had some 10 names of program directors and other VIPs, but the police said they must conduct further investigation to verify the credibility of the document before summoning those mentioned.

``The document had thumbprints and a social security number and seems to have been written by Jang,'' a police officer said.

Her family members first opposed revealing the document but changed their minds and asked for further investigation since some contents of the letter had already been disclosed.

Yoo Jang-ho, Jang's former manager and head of management agency Hoyaspotainment, were in possession of the document and first leaked it to the public. He was hospitalized after a failed suicide attempt, Friday.

However, police said they are not sure whether the document they have found is the one Yoo disclosed and presumed the possibility of the existence of more than one document. Yoo said he burnt the letter in front of Jang's family and does not have any copies of the letter.

Kim Sung-hoon, head of Jang's last agency, was quoted as claiming that the documents are fabricated, adding that Jang's former manager ``fabricated'' the letters out of his disgruntlement over four criminal and civil lawsuits filed against him.

Meanwhile, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will provide standardized contract forms to entertainment agencies in the first half of the year.

``Jang's letter aroused concern toward the unfairness of entertainers' contracts once again,'' a FTC official said. ``We found several unfair contracts at big agencies last year, but it's almost impossible to investigate hundreds of small- and medium-sized companies.''

The FTC will continuously supervise management agencies to rid them of unfair contracts in addition to the enforcement of standard contract terms.

This really makes my blood boil.

I wonder how many actors and actresses are in this situation and remaining silent. I hope this sparks some kind of revolt against the disgusting state of the entertainment industry here.

Actually, to be honest.. what she went through isn't new. It's common practice in Asia (I grew up being told what kind of industry the entertainment industry is in HK).

Actually, I think it's pretty fair. Whatever your feelings about michaelambling, the K-Media are known trolls. Before you object, the definition of troll is (from Wikipedia, as a real dictionary wouldn't have the def yet...):

Quote:
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

Is that not the very essence of Korean journalism?

Nothing should be done, no changes please! This is Korea and you don't want to mess with anyone's livelihood. Keep the status quo, if you try to improve things or stop celebrities(mostly female) from killing themselves there could be serious repercussions.

The battle is really not worth fighting. It's a non-starter. You don't want to corner the Ministry of Justice into doing a real investigation or the Movie industry into cleaning it up because they just might turn their backs on more female celebrities that get raped(MOJ) or rape more of them(TV/Movie industry). Has anyone considered the worst case scenarios before deciding to start rocking the Korean Movie industry boat?

There are potentially very negative consequences for all remaining female celebrities.

Later in Court:

Judge: You raped her
Jang: No~o I told her that if she wanted to keep her job she'd sleep with these guys and, of course, me.
Judge: You did beat he, though
Jang: That was part of it, I said rough sex would be involved and if she didn't want sex tapes getting out then she would have to do it.
Judge: So everything was done under form of duress?
Jang: yeah, pretty much. But I can show some remorse if you'd like.
Judge: Please do, it makes this paperwork so much easier.
Jang: Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Judge: What can i say, NOT GUILTY
