When did you start? A few more details would be nice.

He could be wanting it to by-pass tax. Somebody commented on the BankBook scam. ANother reason is he needs another account in which to hide money. Some schools charge more than what is legally allowed and they ask parents to pay to secret accounts.

Who cares, it's not his bank book, it's your bank book. I'm not 100% sure where mine even is at the moment...

NEVER allow this. You will get screwed. This is especially a problem with afterschool programs. It's very illegal.

What can he do with a bank book? If he has a bank book, can he make withdrawals from your account? I agree that it's just stupid in principle to give your boss your bank book, but what exactly can he do? He can transfer money to your account, but how can he pull money out?

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for. I've never done it before in Korea, and I know this job is sketch, but I had to accept something or get deported.

Has anybody heard of E.L.E. (Jungsan-dong) in Ilsan?

For example, with the afterschool programs, they shift large dollar amounts in and out of the account in an attempt to avoid paying tax. A year or more down the road, long after you have left the job, you could find yourself with a huge tax bill, as they have it on record that you were being paid far more money than you actually ended up getting.

People doing this are trying to dump the tax burden on you -- hoping it'll never be a problem if you leave the country in a year or less before the gov't comes after you for tax. Even if they do, it's your account -- what are you gonna do about it?

As usual, the search function sucks, but here is another thread about it:

You can withdraw money with a bank-book, and sometimes bank staff aren't very sercretive with PINs.

He could transfer money in and out of your account, "washing" it. Don't do it.

In addition to the scams mentioned above, he would be able to know exactly how much money you have in case he wants to delay your pay. He would say, "I see you have plenty of money in your account so it won't be a problem for you if I have to wait a couple of weeks to pay you."

It's been done before.

There was a time when bosses could call up a bank and get a report on your balance. I don't know if it still happens. The laws were supposed to have been tightened up on that, but who knows...?

I would say "good bye" and leave immediately if my boss said he needed my bank book for any reason. To continue working there is incomprehensible.

Tell him that it's no problem. Also offer him your passport and diploma.

I think the boss asking for it is more stupid.
