I've been looking over this very informative website, but have been unable to find the answers for a few questions. I am currently in Korea on an E2 visa. I have been here for about 9 1/2 months and am nearing my contract's expiration date. I have decided that I will leave this school after the 1 year is finished, but would still like to work in Korea. I would like to change schools and find a teaching job in Seoul. I was wondering - will this be considered renewing my contract or is this an extension of stay?

I was wondering exactly what things I will need to renew my visa. Will I need the background check again? Can I just stay in Korea and change jobs with a smooth transition or must I return to the U.S. for these formalities? Please let me know. I am finding information that is very contradicting.

P.S. I have been reading this website for about a year now, and now would like to speak with other members. This is my first post and hope to receive decent answers.

This really makes no sense. I don't understand why I would need a completely new visa.

I just called immigration. It looks as if I will need the following things:

1. Release letter from current school. (anyone know where I get this?)
2. Copy of business registration - new school.
3. New contract and a copy of it.
4. Reference form (from website - where is it?) that new employer must fill out.
5. Show my passport and alien registration card.
6. Pay 90,000 won for 'extension of stay' and 'change of employer' stuff.

So I don't know where to get the release letter or a reference form. Does anyone know where I could find these documents? It's great that people are responding!

Holy crap! Do you mind posting a copy of your contract and the name of this school? Ya know, just so that all of us can avoid this place like the plague.

How long have they been pulling this kinda stuff?

Not really off topic, but kind of:

What if you leave Korea for a few month, but don't go to your home country. Lets say you spend a few months in China. Then, you decide to come back to Korea from China without going back to your country. If you decide to get another job here in Korea, what would you need to satisfy the CRC requirement? Would a CRC from your home country work, even though you never went back there?

This is something I have been wondering about but I can't really find a *logical* answer. It seems like immi will accept a CRC from your home country even though you didn't return, but shouldn't they ask for one from the country you came directly from? That makes much more sense.

OP,
I'm amazed you put up with/are putting up with the crap this school has thrown at you! In your next job, from the very first, you must learn to be adamant about saying "No" (and keep saying 'No") to any unreasonable requests. Many K employers will 'test you' soon after you start. If you accept any shit, they'll walk all over you - especially the 'wacky', uniquely K, evangelical/fundamentalist Christian ones. Rolling Eyes
