I am looking to spend a week in Hanoi in April, and have been looking at airfares, and $500 US is the cheapest i can find. Does anyone know of any cheaper fares, or somewhere that can offer the same relaxing holiday (no big cities please) for a cheaper price? |

You are aware that Hanoi is a major, major metropolitan city, right? It is very large and highly congested. |

I realise that it is a city, but it was the surrounding rural area that interested me. |

If you want to relax, avoid Hanoi at all costs. I found it to be incredibly busy and stressful in a bad way. Even though HCMC is bigger, I liked it a lot more. If you want a quiet place to relax, head to Hoi An or Phu Quoc Island. |

yeah - Hanoi does not offer any kind of relaxing holiday
even Saigon -
try Cambodia or Laos
and yes, 500 is an average price, actually pretty good - was much more last year |

If spending week (or even a few days) in a giant outdoor museum filled with mediocre tailors and obese, sun-burned, fanny-pack wearing tourists is your idea of relaxing, then by all means, go to Hoi An. |

I actually disagree with the above posters. I didn't find Hanoi to be that hectic. Yes, its a big city, but its pretty manageable. I covered the whole city on a bike easily. Also, I highly recommend taking the train up to SaPa in the Northwest . . . beautiful area. I was there in December and did some trekking and stayed in a few villages.
As for the cost, $500 sounds like a pretty good deal. I paid over $650.
Good luck and have fun! |

Like one of the posters above, I'd recommend Phu Quoc as a place to get away from "hustle and bustle."
It's a big island and 90% of the roads are still dirt. Great for riding around on a scooter. Some nice beaches, national parks, etc.
The government has started to pour investment into the place, so it may become more like the big Thai resort islands soon enough. I'd recommend going before that happens. |
