| Can someone please tell me if there is an American military base in Daegu? And if so, what (phonetically) should I say to the cabbie to get me there? Does the base have a pharmacy, PX, etc? Can civillians shop there? PLease help. |

Henry is pretty small, but Walker has a lot of services. Pretty sure the civilian I MEAN PEDESTRIAN gate is Gate 2. You can get awful close on the subway. There ain't a lot going on there though. When those guys aren't working, they like to stay *far* away from post. A lot of the CPs and MPs come in from Carroll, which, imo, is a lot cooler because it's a lot smaller. But if you're looking for lots of good services, Walker is the place to be. They have a Taco Bell!

Hi. If you want to go by subway, go to Hyeonchungno, on the red line. I'm not sure what exit you have to go out.
If you want to go to Walker, say to the cabbie: kempeu Walkah ga jusseyo.
It sounds a bit strange, but it's just 'Camp Walker' Koreanified with 'please go' attached. |

Sure, you can tell the cabbie "Camp Walker ko juseyo" and he'll take you close. But there are a few gates to Walker. You want the one across from the police station. The cabbie? He may or may not know which one. So be ready to walk a couple of clicks if you use these instructions.
But... as an initial investment, you tell the cabbie "Dongsan Pyeongwan ko juseyo" and follow the signs to "International Clinic" you can pick up a little sheet. Tell the nice lady at the desk "My friend sent me for directions" and look on the coffee table in front of the sofas, in the International Clinic Office. There will be a multigenerational photocopied sheet with phrases like "Camp Henry, Gate 3" in English and in romanized Korean. Say "Can I have this, please?" and they will say "sure" (introduce yourself).
Then, whenever you need any medical shit done GO THERE. They are so integrated with the 8th Army that they take Aetna and Blue Cross, among others.
And tell them I said hi. |

Fair enough about Walker...okey dokey - the police station is a good place to go.
You can say 'Nambu gyeongchal-seo ga jusseyo' to go to that specific police-station. When you get there, cross the road and walk to the right (the big gate where you can enter is about 100m down the road). The subway station is a further 100-150m down the road. |

Not unless it's your retired military ID card. If the DD 2 (United States Uniformed Services Identification Card) is expired, it will not gain you access to the base. Also, civilians not affiliated with the US military (SOFA-sponsored civilians and dependents of US military members) cannot shop at the PX or the commissary. To shop at the PX and the commissary, one needs both an ID card (military/dependent/SOFA-sponsored civilian) and a ration card. Ration cards are not issued to non-command sponsored personnel.
There are two pedestrian gates. If you tell the cabbie "Camp Walker kaseyo", you will be taken to the gate near the base library. This is also the gate to get a temporary base pass for a vehicle. To get the vehicle pass, you need to present the following: vehicle registration, vehicle insurance, driver license, and ID card (military/dependent/SOFA-sponsored civilian). A sponsor can sign in up to three guests at that gate or the gate near Hyeonchungno (현충로) Station.
US Army Garrison-Daegu has three bases in the Daegu area: Camp Walker, Camp Henry, and Camp Carroll. Camp Henry is close to Camp Walker and is mostly residential but also has a club (oddly enough, closed on Saturdays), a PX cinema, and a small PX shoppette. Camp Carroll is in Waegweon. |

WHOA WHOA WHOA... Come on now... Are you not mentioning the Taco Bell at Walker because it's OPSEC? I mean...it's a Taco Bell... TACO BELL!
FYI, Carroll is a warehouse, but B company is really friendly and the gym is really nice, they got a brand new swimming pool last year. |

I'm just not impressed by Taco Bell. Anyway, if you gain access to the base, then you can eat at any of the restaurants there. |
