VP sais my afterschool classes are cancelled this term. Something about needing money from POE - and students being busy with other things.
(A serious loss of overtime pay for me.)

Anyone else lose their after school classes?

Is this a sign that Korea has finally stopped throwing money at Englisheeeeee (during the recession, at least)? Or is it that my afterschool classes were 'unpopular' and a waste of time (hmmmm)?

Any info appreciated.

Ours are delayed a few weeks - something about procuring funding.

Mine start next week for two hours a week and the teacher class starts two weeks later. Mind you I make close to the minimum, so they can probably afford them.

Hi There,

Mine were too, it is a bit of a thing right now.....sure the funding has gone down a bit overall.

I think it's no reflection on us, perhaps.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm anticipating more funding cuts in public English education. Korea's spending so much on public English education - for very slow results - and most classes are paying 2 salaries (for 1 actual job). That's OK in manuafacturing boom times - but those days are finished - for quite a while, I fear.

And, in my case, I'm not sure why they need to pay me anyway. My co-teachers' English is excellent and they can take English classes on their own.

At the school where the kids pay for them they have doubled from last year. My other school they are free and they were cancelled last semester so the school could save money. The Korean teachers still taught theirs so money wasn't that tight.

I say get the parents to pay as people value stuff they pay for.

I have 24 hours of regular classes, so thats 2 hours of OT

I found out I'll have 2 after school classes a week.

I'm also scheduled to teach 2 hours of an after school class to 3rd grade MS students applying to foreign language high schools.

First 2 hours of OT are at 20k/hour, the other 4 are at 30k/hr.

Mine are canceled because unless I'm over 22 I CAN'T get paid for any extra classes. From the Office of Education.

It's okay for the Korean teachers apparently.

Strike number whatever against PS jobs.

My after school pay was canceled due decreased budget. I stil have my 3:20 to 4:00 class, but I got a reduced schedule compared to last semester though. Give me an easily paced 5 month semester with only 1 holiday, May 5th Childrens Day. Forget extra pay, 3 day weekends, and trips to Cherry Blossom festivals of the South such as Jinhae as 2 days is not enough to do much.

Mine begin next week, last semester I did one each day bar Wednesdays, but got screwed because I taught a whole hour instead of 40mins for 20k. For the work I didn't mind, but it's a bum deal compared to everyone I read on here.

I know someone who teaches 26 normal hours, then 6 more hours overtime! All for 20k, but she says it's pretty easy because the 26normal hours are all just from some elementary school book where they put on a cd and play games. The actual overtime classes are described as fun because she can actually do something interesting.

Update: Overtime approved - but halved. Only 2 hours a week for a drama class.

I used to teach 18 classes per week and then do six after-schools per week at 40,000 an hour.

That's done, though.

i work exclusively for an after school program, started a week ago, and my classes have doubled in size since. more kids to teach, but less chance of the classes closing. my boss just said SMOE asked him to open up additional af programs in Seoul.

i guess you guys work for SMOE, then teach after school classes? that's rough.

I'm Busan, and they are starting to be strict about no extra class pay even if the students pay unless the teacher is above 22 hours.
