Hi There

I was wondering if an e2 visa is canceled is there any leeway given to allow a teacher to find another position or would the teacher have to leave the country straight away?

Also what is the punishment for staying here without a visa??

All stupid questions i know but need to know to make a decision??

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cathal

Not sure about the first, though I do believe you will have to go to the Immigration Office and get a exit order...

As for staying here, the punishments vary from fines to deportations to being let off.
However being let off seems to happen to those who only overstay their visa by 1-2 days. If you are planning on staying indefinitely without a visa and you are caught, the punishment will likely include fines, imprisonment and deportation.

If you end your contract prematurely, you have 14 days to leave the country as of your last day of employment, the length of time you have to find a new job and apply for a new visa provided you have your LOR. Once this period expires and you leave Korea, you'll have to reapply for a new job and visa back home. Your employer must notify Immigration in writing that the contract has ended and he must specify the last day of work.

I overstayed by 1 day back in February 2000. Airport immigration detained me long enough to pay a small fine. But last year when I went on a visa run to Fukuoka my visa stamp was denied on account of this infraction. I then had to return to Canada to get it put in my passport. Before December 15 2008, I had no problem at the Korean consulates in Japan.
