I'm just interested in whether or not anyone here has come across any illegal ESL teachers and if you find these types of teachers a menace to the industry or something you should just look the other way to?
I knew, heard about one guy working here for over seven years as an illegal teacher. I know another guy working here now. Problem is, I often feel like these teachers are looking down on the fact that teaching should be a legally endorsed profession requiring at least a college degree, like it's so stupid and easy, which in turn causes them and hagwons to cheapen their respect for the whole industry itself. This kind of quashes any semblance of what might be called a bonefied industry with any teachers talented to teach whatsoever, or the fact that there might be some here capable of doing so. It also causes most to lose faith in the fact ESL might require some kind or degree of knowledge or skill.
What's more, these illegals are often hard to get along with, which makes you wonder if you should just turn them in. |

Unfortunately I've found more people in Korea that are teaching legally that are more of a menace to the profession ...
That being said I have come across some that are indeed doing so, but I'm more stumped why they are so matter-of-fact that they do it. Sitting in the office one day a guy said that he couldn't make the meeting because he had to go do his private students. I have had that happen with a couple different people. They are just too vocal about it and I laugh, nearly hysterically each time ... |

If an illegal teacher is incompetent, or stupid enough to broadcast their activities, they'll soon enough get the heave-ho. Turning them in is rat behavior -- do you want to go there?
If all the illegals got thrown out tomorrow, nothing much would change. |

AND WHAT THE F#%#$# do you care!!!!
are you a bonefied teacher?? do you have a teachers degree???
is the korean HAKWONS first ambition, motivation~ EDUCATION!!!??
HAKWONS ARE CORRUPTED!! so what if the white teachers are too!!!
they speak fluent English? thats enough!!!
your degree in zoology, biology or computer science.. doesnt make you a perfect Teacher in ESL!! just lets you fit the legal criteria to obtain a VISA!
without those regularities.. people from all over the world would be here teaching to make a living!! life is hard!! people need money!!
back home working 9-5 for 8-12 bucks an hour seems like a headache.
when you could be here making 2grand a month...
this Degree thing is BOGUS!! just a BS policy made by law makers!!
like the rest of lifes BUGUS laws!! stupid bureaucrats with nothing better to do with their time!! but to make our lives harder!!!
still like i said.. without that law.. every tom , d i c k and harry would be here flooding this country!
so the few illegals here.. so be it!! good on them!!!
I mean would you turn in VICTOR or GONZALIZ working in a factory or picking apples back home, trying to feed his family???
do you think the kings of 100 - 200 years ago asked the missionaries if they had diplomas? THE WORLD IS GOVERNED BY LAWS!!! doesnt mean they are always right!!!!!
MY DEGREE IS WORTHLESS HERE!!!!!
I have a degree in marketing!!!
does that make me a good teacher???
what I end up doing all day is thinking how stupid my boss is. and telling him how to market his business!!!
also what about~BOB the 45 year old, divorced male from Indiana who happens to be an alcoholic and loses his temper with the kids all the time, frustrated, moody.. just because he has a degree in economics which he graduated 20 years ago!! does that make him better than the other teacher..
PAUL! who happens to be 25. has no degree.. , LOVES CHILDREN!! has heaps of energy!! and is always cheerful and in a good mood!!!!
THREE DOORS KNIGHT!!! TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ARSE!!!!!
a piece of paper means NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!
anyone will tell you that!!
its what you do or dont do with it which COUNTS!!! |

| Well until Korea recognizes EFL qulifications in the visa requirements I don't sneer at illegal teachers, and expect that they don't sneer at me. I know people illegally here with several years teaching experience and TEFL certificates, and people legally here who exactly no years experience and a modular degree in needlework and sociology, with two semesters in Peruvian law. Being legally here, and being qualified to teach are sadly two entirely different things. |

I had to read this several times before I realized you were not talking about calcification, which at first was the only thing that remotely made sense, but rather using a Latin phrase, "bona fide", or in good faith. Your spelling is certainly interesting. |

Bona Fide reminds me of Oh Brother Where Art Thou...
Anyways I have no problem with illegals in that they are people too. The problem I have is they make a committment to work somewhere, and if they get caught, well that leaves students and co-workers rather disappointed and holding the bag. Illegal workers kinda go in the same category as "midnight runners". |

Okay, look, I'm gonna make an executive decision here and lock this thread up and tell everyone to continue posting on the other thread right here in this same forum that tackles the same topic. Yes, I know the OP of that thread takes the opposite view, but I personally can't see any difference in the discussion that is going on.
