Does anyone know if there's any sort of method to the way they assign SMOE teachers to either elementary, middle, or high school? Would they be more inclined to place teachers with a master's or with teaching certification in a high school? Would teachers that get hired earlier on in the hiring season have a greater chance of being placed in the type of school they requested? And any idea of which type of school is most popularly requested by teachers?

I specified high school as my preference both on my application and during my interview and was hired by SMOE almost two months ago for the fall semester. I've got a year of hagwon experience teaching a wide range of ages and I am CELTA-certified. Am I likely to get placed in a high school?

It all depends on the number of positions available. There are far more NSETS in EL and MS than HS. If you asked for HS but there are no openings then you'll probably be put in MS.

What Faunaki said. Don't get your hopes up.

Having said that, I hit the jackpot as I specified the area and high school, and got both. I think I got lucky because no other NSETs want to live in Smellybong! I love it when a plan comes together. Smile

Good luck.

I guaranteed you this, in elementary schools preference is given to women. There aren't many women who teach in Korea to begin with and most principals in elementary school prefer women teachers.

I wasn't even asked area preference. Just kind of told "Do you have a preference for what area you'd like to be in? Because we promise nothing!"
