I've seen a few ads listed, even on cragslist but also at Dave's, for teaching English online. One ad says it pays 30,000 won per hour. Considering its a stay at home job that sounds pretty good to me. I realize many of you wanted to the full experience of living in Asia, etc. but I'm wondering if the online thing is a good deal, is it something fairly new and is it the thing of the future?

It would be ok in 15 minute or 30 minute sessions. But trying to talk to the same person for 60 minutes bucks would be tough.

You would need to speak the language of your student or someone to recruit for you. They would want a cut from what you could be paid in person. So, cheap group lessons sound like the way to go.

You could then have higher level students interact while lower level students just listen and pay a "beginner's" fee.

I have some friends who do online teaching with Koreans from Canada. They are only paid 10$ an hour though. At least they don't have to worry about the exchange rate. One friend told me it's a good deal since often the people are too busy to anser the phone (it is VOIP conversation) but they get paid anyway. She also told me that the students are sometimes really drunk and/or at norebang and they have really hilarious conversations.

Another option would be to just find the students online yourself. I know lots of teachers doing it. Not hard these days to arrange payment.

There are some sites offering to "hook up" teachers and students but they almost always take a big cut and in my opinion, for nothing. The web is there, is cheap and you can just do it yourself. Short learning curve and why be a slave.

We have free rooms on EFL Classroom 2.0. You can even post up a classified. The Scribblar in particular, is great for teaching. The voice quality exceptional. http://eflclassroom.com/scribblar.html

Our other room with video works and you can make your own private teaching room. http://host1.gchats.com/eflclassroom/

That's about all those home based office jobs pay. They have to provide the computer, internet, and place to do it; only perk is the software application free of charge. No benefits. These are jobs, but you're an independent subcontractor with no benefits; not even unemployment insurance. I was going to do IT help desk, accounts, and other business process services in a home office at home through a self employment program for American military veterans where affiliated companies contract you for services that the VA sets you up with. The pay is only $8 to $10 an hour and then you're tax filing is so complex it will take much time and effert or require seeking the services of an accountant.

Basically, you're operating a home business for minimum wage level of earnings with noncompete aggreements stopping you from taking over accounts or cutting out the middle man who is just outsourcing business processes. These sorts of opportunities are great for college students. Pay is really low, becuase you're working for a company outsourced by another company to receive these services electronically. One such company is Convergys Corporation and they too only pay beans with little opportunity to save up money or move up in the world.

My school district has a cyber learning centre. All but one teacher who's taught there has either generally or greatly disliked the teaching aspect of the job. The one who prefered it to classroom teaching still quit midway through his contract for various reasons.
