Global War on Terror given a new name
But the new moniker may merely be provisional.

The Obama administration appears to be backing away from the phrase "global war on terror," a signature rhetorical legacy of its predecessor.
In a memo e-mailed this week to Pentagon staff members, the Defense Department's office of security review noted that "this administration prefers to avoid using the term 'Long War' or 'Global War on Terror' [GWOT.] Please use 'Overseas Contingency Operation.' "
The memo said the direction came from the Office of Management and Budget, the executive-branch agency that reviews the public testimony of administration officials before it is delivered.
Not so, said Kenneth Baer, an OMB spokesman.
"There was no memo, no guidance," Baer said yesterday. "This is the opinion of a career civil servant."
Coincidentally or not, senior administration officials had been publicly using the phrase "overseas contingency operations" in a war context for roughly a month before the e-mail was sent. |
What do we think? |

We think the first step is to determine if it's a real e-mail or just a figment of someone's imagination. If it is a real e-mail, then we need to determine if it came out of the OMB or just from some civil servant.
Whatever, it won't fit on a bumper sticker, so it won't fly. |

Why not? We went from JFK and his successors' "counterinsurgency" to R. Reagan and H.W. Bush's "low-intensity conflict" to the Clinton administration's "operations other than war."
People love their euphemisms.
We employ military force abroad to project and protect our presence and interests, politically, militarily, economically. This involves basing forces, transiting forces, conducting overt and covert military and paramilitary operations in the sea, land, and air in a variety of specific missions, sometimes defensively, sometimes offensively, sometimes to kill the enemy.
What is wrong with simply calling it like it is? Would be nice to return to "the Department of War," too. |

Since it's some iffy shit anyway, how about IFFFI? That would certainly fit on a bumper sticker.
Israel / Foreign Fossil Fuel / Israel
With foreign fossil fuel seemingly being more important than domestic energy production and Israel being more important in America than America itself, I think it would fly. |
