The new semester has already started and I've just been presented with my new contract.

5. Teaching Hours

1) Teaching hours will be 15 to 16 hours a week.
2) In case the teaching hours per week are less than 15 hours, the employee should teach additional hours next semester. In case the employee doesn't teach at least 30 hours for two semesters, he or she is expected to pay back the deficit hours.

Needless to say I have not signed it, but does anyone know if this is even legal? The problem with my "University" is that if you try to negotiate anything you are seen as making a problem (the other foreign teacher just quit today). We just get the answer "this is the same as the Koreans". My arse.

Cheers[/b]

it is a contract renegotiation. so...renegotiate.

you can find another job much easier than they can find another teacher, esp. when the new term is underway.

a large % of your value is your scarcity. when one "settles down" at one school suchscarcity is diminished.

yeah, the new clause is bogus.

Bugger that. If they play their cards right, they could end up owing yo no pay at all in the second semester.

I've refused to sign it and I've just been paid. Thank god for the F-2 visa!

It seems a little fishy to me. I think you made the right choice--lucky F-2!

I'm confused by this statement. The new semester has no bearing on the date of contract expiration. What does your present contact say?... that's the only thing that counts.

If they want you to re-sign with the quoted clauses in the new contract, just cross out the words "or 16' in 5.(1) and all of 5.(2)... hand it back, smile, and don't say a word. See what the K's reaction is. Wink Take the negotiations from there. Cool

The contract for the last school year expired at the end of February, so technically I don't have a contract. I spoke to the Korean professors and told them I would not sign it until they changed it to 15 hours a semester, but this place is not flexible in the slightest and I am seen to be making a problem. They also mentioned that the other teacher who quit (who did a really good job BTW) would have trouble getting a job as "Korea is a small country" and they would give him an unjustified "terrible reference". He's worked there for 4 years so he can't have been doing that bad a job.

They will probably be advertising his job (maybe mine too) on here soon, so this a heads up. If you see a Uni in Incheon advertising for an immediate position avoid. This is just the tip of a very large iceberg.

If you do a search for Incheon Unis on here you will see people who have had funny experiences at this place. Anyone remember the guy who got sacked after 6 years for blogging about Dokdo?

Wave 'bye bye' to your 'institute of higher education' and get a job where you will be valued/respected.
